OotS 631!

Bear in mind that, like the credit card companies, Imps are LAWFUL evil. Whatever they say is bound to be technically true, and completely misleading.

If the Nine Hells and the banking system armwrestled for the title of LE paragon I'd put my bets on the latter . . .

Anyway the good thing is, that if this is some form of faustian pact, then it can be broken.

'For all the wrong reasons'

It strikes me that asking for Ultimate Arcane Power to solve all your problems is 'the wrong reasons'--it's not that any of V's goals (save V's family, save Haley, etc.) are bad--but V isn't asking for these things to be solved. V's obsessed with UAP--which might be able to solve these problems, but it might not. And V had allies that could have aided V if V wasn't obsessed with UAP.

And what will V do, if UAP doesn't solve V's problems? After all, V could suddenly become 20th level, lose the restriction on Conjuration school, and gain the ability to cast any 1st-4th level spells at will and still have no chance of defeating the dragon!

[*]In no sense is saying those words the means by which s/he recieves the power

Neither was Haley's gifthorse the means by which she got her speech back, it was her declaration of love. But it was the fact she did not look into the gifthorse's mouth that led her into the position that she had to make the declaration.

[*]S/he didn't say those words to anyone,

And there was no literal gift horse, Nale was a human.

Doesn't work. We already know the Oracle doesn't go for the kind of tortured readings it takes to make it work.

For me the "tortured reading" is claiming that when you speak words at someone you're not saying words to them. I also find it a very tortured reading, for anyone to claim that what V is doing right now is for all the wrong reasons.

I have no problem believing that there may be something that will the terms even better than Kubota did (though that one fit them PERFECTLY where I'm concerned), but this deal can't possibly be it. This contract is (possibly) the WRONG THING for the RIGHT REASONS. It won't be the right thing for the wrong reasons no matter how much people try to twist and turn it.

I'm guessing this credit card is a temporary "we'll give you a bit of power now, and you'll owe us" with a more permanent deal in the future possible. In this case, V may be given temporary access to great power in exchange for perhaps getting that chalice they are looking for. If it turns out he was still too late to stop the dragon, he may THEN throw in his lot with the demons, making it permanent, giving him the power to track down the dragon. Not in order to free the souls of his loved ones, but in order to get revenge.

Why wouldn't V be pre-approved for a Faustian Pact?

Sabine already secretly notified the lower planes of the Snarl and the Gates, and presumably that the OoTS was deeply involved in the whole issue.

Remember what the Imp said was in the form letter rejecting the deal for Kubota, the projected return for them was too low for the investment. Imagine the projected return if the Nine Hells had a controlling interest in someone who would be directly interacting with the seals keeping a god-killing, world-eating abomination that predates all known creation locked away, that can be harnessed and controlled to conquer the world in such a way that even the Gods Themselves can't stop without destroying the entire mortal plane? I'd imagine multiple Archdevils and Pit Fiends are fighting to be the one that he owes his favors directly to.

(Not that Qarr the Imp knows any of this yet, just that V is a mid-to-high level wizard with fairly powerful friends)

Yeah, I think that's a pre-approved offer. His infernal credit rating is sky-high: his projected ability to pay back gifts with favors to devils is nearly unlimited.

Makes me wonder if Sabine (remember the comic entitled "A Special Pre-Approved Offer"?), or some of Sabine's bosses (I know there was a comic in which we got to meet them, but I can't find it right now), will be the ones to make the deal with V. It'd certainly be an interesting way to bring the Linaer Guild back onto the picture.

Sabine is a succubus, and thus (assuming 3e-ish planar cosmology) has informed an entirely different and ideologically-opposed set of lower planes to the ones the imp is working for. Possibly that information may have leaked over, but quite probably not.

On the other hand, the simple fact that V is a highly-powerful spellcaster who's been flinging around a lot of divination magic would be sufficient to attract the attentions of extra-planar powers.
