OotS 787 is Up

One of the more predictable plot twists, since people were suggesting it could be Thog. Then again, not every plot twist in OotS has to be a complete surprise.

We know that Roy is at least as good, or better, than Thog as a fighter. Thog's main strength is his rage, and his biggest weakness is how gullible and easy to manipulate he is.

On the other hand, Roy hasn't been constantly competing in an extremely deadly arena for the past few months. Thog may have a level or two on him at this point.

Or: Thog has not had a level appropriate challenge in quite some time (most of the arena challenges are way below him) while Roy has (aside from the being dead and all) - so it may be that Thog is lagging behind. Rich could play it either way.

There are several ways to play it.

Remember, Roy did learn some kind of fighter super-feat from his apparently epic-level Grandfather while in the Celestial Realms. We don't know what it is other than really cool and it would royally mess up a spellcaster's concentration if they had it used on them during casting. We saw his grandfather use it on an evil adventurer that was high enough level to Plane Shift to the Celestial Realms to go XP hunting, and get killed in one round by his grandfather using that technique. Maybe a chance to break that feat out?

We've already established that Tarquin knows exactly who he really is, since we saw the flashback shot of Thog facing off against the Empress of Blood (before she got fat) during the event when the Linear Guild had a falling out with Tarquin's group. Tarquin is the sort to make use of somebody if it suits him. This way Thog eventually dies, which serves him by eliminating his son's favorite goon, but provides lot of public entertainment on the way down.

Do you have a link to that episode, r maybe the episode number or aproximate date / time?

I do wish it had been the spiked-chain-half-Ogre.

But it was pretty obvious it was Thog. And I agree with the above - it having been obvious made it no less funny. :p

Giant In the Playground Games, OotS #497 (Battle where it is first used by Horace Greenhilt, Roy's father)
Giant In the Playground Games, OotS #498 (Where he agrees to train Roy)
Giant In the Playground Games, OotS #600 (Roy training in the mystery uber-feat)
Giant In the Playground Games, OotS #666 (Where Roy reveals he remembers his training in the Feat from the afterlife)

As expected as it was, and even though there are any number of options that could've been funnier, I think having Thog as the champion really fits with the D&D campaign style of the comic. The Linear Guild are already recurring villains. It makes sense to use one of their number here.
