Ah...I don't think so. 886, 881, 880 all had extra panels. The dream montage as well as the 'Girard is a powerful illusionist' pretty solidly foreshadowed something like this was going to happen in the plot and not rushed. The moment the strip cut to the wedding it seemed pretty likely Elan would be the one to point out the illusion since it breaks the narrative. Not a 'oh no the readers are angry let's wrap this up quick' moment on Rich's part who is fairly solid on this sort of thing.... considering 888 is where they arrive at the altar scene it was pretty likely they'd be out in 889 (and the montage was 887).
 

Also, the discussion threads at the Giant in the Playground forums have (proportionally) far more comments from readers who have enjoyed the past few strips than those who have not. That's not unusual, over there, but it does seem unlikely that Mr. Burlew would go out of his way to change his plans merely to satisfy what is (at least over there) only a vocal minority.
