OotS: Start of Darkness

Mild thread necromancy because I've just read the book. And I have to say...

Holy. God.

This book has everything that OotS should have. Laugh-out-loud funny bits, and some serious story and character development.

I mean serious. You actually feel for these characters--a lot.

Rich, if you read this, kudos in a major way. Your "silly little comic strip" has truly become something great.

Spoilers? So why does Redcloak put up with Xykon, anyway?

It would hard to spoil that without repeating the content of about 1/3 of the book, at least. Let's just say it's a long story, and rather more complex than might be expected.

Non-spoilers:

Because without Xykon he won't have an army. (He wouldn't lose one either.) Lets face it, we know who wins the Charisma competition there. Also Xykon is more powerful. There's nothing that says your pet can't be more powerful than you, as long as you're smarter than them and treat them with respect.

Spoilers: Well, actually, I don't have Start of Darkness. Did it come out May 15th of this year? Me want!

Add this to the backlog of comic compilations I want to get. Zogonia is now on the list too. I imagine that a book on the Linear Guild can't be all that far away. Anything book gives me more comics with thog in it can only be a good thing. :D

I just finished the book, and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed.

I didn't have any laugh out loud moments and not too much was even amusing to me (except maybe the Preface).

If there's any emotion I'd associate with it, it would be "sadness".

It was comic rather than funny - which is suitable, given the degree to which it's about corruption. For those of us who find that well-done comedy is more profound than tragedy, it's a gem.

I would have expected the circus escape to be funny even for those who don't want layers in their humor, but it's never safe to predict the taste of others who differ from you too much.

However, those readers who resent the "story-based" strips and character development and wish it were all gaming in-jokes should probably save their money.

I enjoyed the heck out of Start of Darkness. Xykon got little in the way of character development, but hey, there's not much there to develop. I thought of the book as "The Start of Redcloak", and as such, found it endlessly fascinating and funny.

I must say I agree. While I enjoyed the storyline, I found it to be a bit depressing. But I guess that comes with the territory of writing the stories of evil characters.
