OOTS - The Players

Andor

First Post
One of the odd things about OOTS is that it's obviously a game. There is a sharp PC/NPC divide, a railroading GM, 4th wall violations, and PC who have trouble staying in character. (I'm looking at you Roy.)

And yet, we know almost nothing about the players.

For example who plays Belkar? He's a trouble making evil character in a good party and has to be one of the least effective builds possible, a two-weapon weilding halfling ranger with a negative wisdom mod? He even fights with 2 short swords instead of a one-handed weapon and a light weapon. Nor does he have any ranks in spot or survival. Does he take the short bus to the game or what?

Belkar fights with two daggers, and could actually be a very effective strategy. Here's how I'd build him:

halfling ranger, dagger specialist
1/ [track], weapon focus (dagger)
2/ [twf]
3/ quickdraw
6/ [imp. twf], point blank shot
9/ imp. crit (dagger)
11/ [g. twf]
12/ precise shot

Now he can make full TWF attacks with daggers, all his weapon focused feats apply to ranged and melee attacks, and he only has to buy one kind of weapon. (We know he enjoys throwing daggers at Miko...)

(Note that I'm not saying Belkar is well built. The Wisdom penalty... yurk. But the dagger focus may be his one good choice.)

I think Belkar's probably the guy who's new to RPGs, the friend of another player who's just having fun playing the psychotic Halfling.

Vaarsuvius is clearly a Power Gamer and a Rules Lawyer, more interested in playing a walking machine of magical destruction then in actually defining his character beyond a few stereotypes. Heck, he didn't even give V a clear gender, and treated the familiar as little more then a throwaway entity.

I think Elan's player is probably a good roleplayer who's enjoying making Elan as funny and silly as possible, rather then just a dumb player.

No Weapon Finesse? He's a halfling fighting TWF. Unless he has truly freakish strength (which we havn't seen much evidence for) he pretty much needs weapon finesse I would think.

Good point. That would prolly boost his attack more than Weapon Focus.
Also, from the Hydra fight, it looks like he may have Improved Sunder?

Funky. -- N

Seconded. I think V got turned into a lizard when the DM was annoyed at the player playing NWN at the table too much.

Haley's player is a deep-immersion type. An in-character love affair, the whole speech impediment thing, and the detailed background (1st Edition Thief father in jail).

Belkar also took a lvl of Barbarian. he is suffering an Xp penalty due to non favored class. mostly i think he took barbarian for the movement bonus and extra hps.

I think that the characters were rolled up in order of stats with no switching rolls. How else do you get a party with a smart fighter, an unwise ranger, and a dumb bard? See, the lack of min-maxing makes for a more interesting party.
