Open Complaint to Peter Adkison

JoeGKushner

Adventurer
I arrived at Gen Con at 11:35 AM and was able to get into the exhibit hall at 4:20 PM.

I think by anyone's standards this is unacceptable.

What's worse were the little things.

Let's say I brought my handicap mother who uses a cane to move along. Was there any shade outside where I had to wait for over two hours?

No.

Were there any rest boths?

No.

Were there any bathrooms?

No.

Were there any food vendors?

No, but there were vendors for liquid refreshment at $2.50 a pop. If you're going to sell pop, see point about having bathrooms. There was one food vendor on the street, but not by the line.

Were we told in a timely manner that the computer was down by a staff member?

No. A fellow customer who just happened to be walking by told us that the machine was down.

Was the staff friendly and efficient?

No. One of the people working customer service said, "People, I'm not taking any crap!" as he stood atop a table. Can we say super unprofessional? After the exhibit hall closed, one of the security guards escorted me out of the hall despite the fact that I was there to talk to several of the people as friends, co-workers, etc... He was so 'afraid' or something that he called in back up so I had three security officers escort me out.

Was the exhibit hall opened a longer?

Not only was it closed on time, it was closed a little earlier and people were FORCED out.

Why did I keep hearing that no one thought the convention would be this big? From what I understood, it was brought to this city in order to better serve a larger crowd. I heard this from several vendors that surprise was the order of the day. So it was brought to another city and state to become bigger but no one expected this year to be bigger?

Why were there no reduntant back up systems? With such a system, a flip of the switch would throw a whole new system up and keep the flow going.

Why were there no back up sytems of any type? I had my card hand written and as I walked away, a print out of my card was spit out of the machine. Another friend had to wait ten minutes before his id printed.

Why were there no MANUAL systems? I have many photos of employees doing NOTHING but waiting for computer systems to come up. This is a waste of Peter's money and my time. How about a hand stamp? How about an express lane? (Which they started at like 4:30 PM or something to get people into the place.) How about a kiosk where you can slide your credit card through and get a badge?

While I did receive a refund for the day, I honestly feel that based on what I make an hour, that I am desrving more, that Peter should fund me with at least a two day ticket for next year.

On the side, one of my friends became physically ill from having to wait in line so long. Real fun watching him vomit on the way home. Very few rest spots inside and as I mentioned, none outside. Standing for five hours in a non-moving line is not a good thing.

On another side note, I went with three friends. Those three friends flat out told me that in all the years they'd be going to Milwaukee, nothing like this ever happened and the sheer ignorance of customer support has convinced them that they will NOT EVER be returning to Gen Con.

I think that Gen Con can be a great place but if you HAVE to preregister because almost every day something like this happens, then someone needs to lose their job and the customers need to be pleased.

Yours truly,

Joe G Kushner

Thanks for your honest and accurate portrayel of what I and two of my friends also just went through, except we never actually paid the money to see a half hour of the convention.

After an over four hour wait in the "Line From Hell" we finally got shuffled to a supposed quicker line, and then waited for a half hour as the staff just scratched their heads and looked at a broken printer. Wondering aloud why they couldn't hand write these simple things, the spokesperson for this group came over to the line. Just to tell one visitor after he asked for a free badge or sometype of discount, that he was ignorant, and than to ask the rest of the line if we were there for badges...

Was he brain dead... we had just wasted over seven hours of our day for this thing (I also came from Chicago), and this was the stupidest thing I had ever heard.

My female friend was about done with it all (We want more females in gaming, this lost one), she has a foot condition, and waiting in the line had made her worse, she was limping by now, and so she just blew up, and yelled out: what the heck do you think we're doing!

This idiot told her to go to back of the line, and started saying stuff like people had waited for six hours the other day (like he was proud of it), and that he saw a line like this in Milwaukee and was too smart to wait in it. I yelled out that he had no right to talk to my friend that way, and that I wanted his name. Of course he ignored me... he couldn't face a rational anger.

My other friend was so pissed off he just left, as did my other friend and myself. I will NEVER go to Gen Con again. And forsee it as a dying convention.

If you are a vendor at the convention, I think you should have some major answers from the people that are running it.

And if you are a visitor that went through this degradation, you should email

peter@gencon.com

(who according to their website wasn't even at this convention...)
or write letters to

GEN CON LLC
120 Lakeside Ave Suite #100
Seattle, WA, 98122

This just might of been gamings Altamont, and the end of the golden era of the roleplaying (which has been dying ever since the big companies bought out all the major brands.)

I disagree that it's dying.

The problem was too many people and an UNTESTED system or a system with no STRESS testing. Just what they wanted and they were completely unprepared for it.

As far as this happening at Milwaukee, I've been going for 10 plus years and while I didn't go every day of every convention, I NEVER had this problem. Two hours at most with apologies up front.

Where was Peter during this whole thing anyway? He wasn't with customer service I'll tell you.

And for those wondering how the new technology works, take a look at this eh? Very hard working with a line out the door, around the building right?

And on that last picture, let me assure you, it's not the only one. Take this one. How many people does it take to look over a sheet of paper? Three? Four? Five?

and for those who can't believe the line I'm talking about is real. There actually was a sign in the window that said Line Con.

I don't get it.
How can someone post this, without some actual first-hand experience to refute Joe's, or some philosophical objection to a consumer criticising the product.

But don't post something unless you've got an actual opinion, and if it's not a knowledgable one, say so.

For myself, to this ignorant reader it sounds like a Very Bad Situation, dripping of incompetence and indefensable mistakes.

Anyone that got caught up in this blunder has my sympathy. I can just imagine if I had splurged, and decided to fly out for a first experience at GenCon, and had been greeted by this...

Ouch guys, this horrendous story brings back memories of waiting for three hours in line for the rollercoastr ride (and being sick the rest of the day from the ride ;-).

I think Peter was somewhere in the back, ramming his head, repeatedly, in to the bathroom wall... ;-)

Joe, i really apprciated the GenCon report (don't want to clutter up that thread with appreciation remarks). I'm half a world away and love to read and see stuff about the (now infamous) GenCon. Thanks Joe!

I've come to the conclusion that what AT was actually doing was providing a numerical score to go along with Joe's comments (i.e. Joe's score for GenCon 2k3), not rating Joe's comments.
