Hm... I love multi-classing, so I'd go for a mid- to high-charisma Sorcerer/Bard mix. Lots of weaker arcane spells, many times a day, plus you're not teh suck when it comes to in-close fighting.
For the comments on Monks not being a melee class... yeah they are; it's what they DO. As for the Clerics and Druids not being damage dealers... yeah they are. You don't need a 20 AC or 1d10+ damage to be a melee combatant.
Ever since the 90's, almost all of my characters were all light-armored melee fighters of some sort, and I had no issues with it.
