Opinions on templar

the Jester

Legend
I have a player imc who wants to take a templar-type prc (he's a temple guardian first and foremost), but I think the templar in DotF is overpowered. Has anyone run one or dmed one? How'd it work? How's the power level?

It seems to get a lot of fighter, barbarian and special unique powers all rolled together- a little much imho.

I haven't see one in action, but I think it's one of the toughest PrCs in the WotC classbooks. With Weapon Specialization, Mettle, DR, Smiting, bonus feats, and spells on top of that, not to mention d10 HD, Ftr BAB, and two good saves, it's more than a little overpowered. If you allow it, I'd suggest dropping the HD to d8s and giving it only a good Fort save, and even then it'll be a very strong PrC.

A big issue I have with the class is frontloading... I'd shift some of the special abilities back a bit, and cut 1/2 the bonus feats, myself. Reduced HD could also be a good idea, though I see a good will save as a central part of the class concept.

Rember that when in doubt trim too much and add back later if the player ends up underpowered. This is far better than taking something away from them.

I haven't had a PC play one but when the book came out and people said the class was too much I decided to make some NPCs and through them up against the PCs. It's a very strong class. Pcs average at least 4 levels higher then the Templars, but the fights did not reflect that.

I found templar to be somewhat of a wash with the entry requirements vs the benefits. Its better than a paladin but not necessarily better than a fighter. Usually a templar will already have 2 levels of fighter become becoming a templar. The 1st level of templar is better than the 3rd level of fighter. Just about everything is better than a level of paladin except the 1st (obviously) and 19th level of paladin when you get 3 new spells instead of the 0-1 new spells you get every other level.

Divine Champion is better than Templar and Sacred Exorcist is a better choice for a Cleric or perhaps Hospitalier.

I think mettle is too good for a first-level power... I think they get way too much, actually. I'm prolly gonna rebuild it from scratch, more or less.

You'll find that mettle comes into play nearly never. Its been discussed before but there are only something like 8 spells that mettle has any effect against. If you are redoing the class, ditch the feat requirements and drop specialization and spells. If you want, you can move mettle to a different level and shift all the other benefits down 1.
