Heavily mini-maxed...... Ummm..... What do you think a munchkin IS????

How about we prohibit all but the most basic books first, and then slowly open up more as the group gains experience in the system, particularly the newbies?

there is a difference between the two, it might be only a player difference on how they approach the character but there is a difference.

Fine by me, its not my game.

But a good DM can use many sources and keep the balance. The only way to be able to do that is learn, and learning usually means making mistakes along the way. So, I would suggest slowly introducing nerw material to the game and not blindling disallow all sorts of books on the premise they might cause problems.
I'm all for opening the game up, but it has to be with eyes open, and the DM should approve it. I also think that the RP elements of a character, and campaign world, are more important than anything else though, so all new material also has to fit in with that.

Crothian - Please iterate the difference.

A min maxer creates their character to take advatage of the rules, a munchkin makes their character and says to hell with the rules. Min maxers are out for personal power but not like the munchkin who doesn't mind sacrificing the fun and ability of his fellow players.

Indeed. Min maxer is also roughly synonomous with power gamer. A munchkin tries to be that, but fails because he cheats, lies, ruins other peoples fun, etc.

In other words, you can play in a game with a min maxer and have quite a good time. Playing with a munchkin is, by defenition, not fun.

So, If someone take a Half-Dragon Rng/Sorc/ShdDan/HWalk 4/1/2/10, he is just mini/maxing and not being a total munchkin?

You can't tell from just that, munchkin is more of a play style then character builder. It could be a munchkin or could be a min maxer. I could also be a person role playing the character in a great campaign and all those class changes make perfect sense for in game happenings.
