Oppression vs. Ambition

Motioning for Whiron to join him in the skiff, Jalakaag says, “Time for a change in venue. Let us make our way closer toward the ocean. Maybe we might even see it.”

Whiron moves toward the skiff, periodically glancing back to make sure that the former enemies continue to keep their distance. “I do not think that the direction makes much of a difference, but I do not want to kill people because they are simple and cannot see us as someone other than an enemy.”

During the next Tenday, Whiron not only manages to find some edible plant material, he also collects 8 measures of Tranquility. Jalakaag takes a peccary just to give some variety to the fish the two are now able to regularly catch. About the middle of the morning on one of the days, the two notice the presence of other people. Like before, these are young Ansylin men; but unlike the others, they stand at a distance, cautiously. Their bodies are decorated and marked in a different manner than those from before, as well.

Whiron removes his hat and pulls back his hair before replacing it. He agrees with Jalakaag but is unsure how to proceed. It seems that these nomadic Ansylins do not speak the common language of the same name or perhaps they, he wonders. He lifts his hands ina universal gesture of peace. “We are simply looking for food. We have no intention to hurt you.”

The leader of the other group literally flinches at the words. It is obvious that he is surprised at hearing them. He speaks back. “Other people who look like you do not speak our language. It is confusing to see you two traveling together, and neither of you is marked. Your skin is plain.”

Apparently all indigenous peoples of the marsh mark their skin with colored clays and with ritualistic scarring. This concept is treated quite differently with the residents of Ansylim, perhaps the ancestors who formed the city were more like nomads. As it happens, the youths want to trade a couple of larger fish that they had taken in exchange for the peccary that Jalakaag had taken. The situation seems ironic considering the motivation to hunt for the meat, but a trade is best suited to any future negotiations that might arise. The two friends probably have a better chance of replacing the peccary than the strangers do of ever acquiring their first. The group departs, offering blessings for the two.

Once the other Ansylins had gone their own way, Jalakaag looks over at Whiron and shrugs. “I am not too worried about the meat, but I am beginning to wonder if there is anything out here other than this marsh. Sure we are going slow, but 20 days and nothing new.”

Whiron sighs and frowns. “You have a valid point. What are we doing out here? I cannot even remember. So much for a change in venue. One more Tenday then we go back to see if we can make a difference.”

Since capturing animals for food has been routine for a while, the two young men are far more interested in exploring to see if any strange or new things can be located in the marsh. A strange thing is a bit of an understatement for a geologic phenomenon. More than twenty days of monotony had come and gone. At first the two do not even realize what they are seeing because it is so out of place, and they are quite close before concluding that it is real, though close is still about 50 strides due to the size.

Jutting out of the mud is a large outcropping of rock. The natural structure is quite rough with many pockets and cracks. Vegetation is even growing in most of the crevices. No understanding exists among the general populace to know if the formation is from some deep upwelling with the earth or some planted projectile of a distant volcano or even some meteorite hurled from the Aster. To any current sentient being, this rock is here by some act of the gods. It sits some 10 strides across and stands about the same in height, being somewhat like half a sphere, though not remotely smooth.
