I actually feel that in many ways 3ed has created more restrictions as well as more options... but it really depends on how you looked at earlier editions. The more streamlined, complex combat system has increased the number of options in the sense that there are now rules for many different maneuvers; at the same time, it results in a way of thinking that if you don't have the feat, it can't be done. Overall, I'd agree that there are more options, but I don't know if that's always a good thing.

One nitpick: The favored soul appears both in CDiv and in MiniHB. Don't count it twice! :)

Correct. Looking over it, I think there are a couple of duplicates like that. Just add in the Unearthed Arcana choices to compensate for any duplicates. :) (Alternatively, you can add in the Forgotten Realms optional classes and races, which do not appear above.)

plus at least 30 prestige classes each book

you really have plenty of room to branch out in this game

Yeah, in the "oh-by-the-way" department, those sources contain a total of 214 prestige classes. :)

Actually, my final tally was 124 playable races and 49 classes, for a total of 6,076 options. So, if I duplicated a class or race, you may adjust accordingly.

It just amazes me that this kind of choice exists within the rules.

I looked at the Forgotten Realms last night. There are a few more races in Underdark, and (IIRC) a couple in the Shining South. No new base classes, though.

And, of course, this concept doesn't include feats at all, which given the number you can choose without any prerequisites, makes for a number of options for each race/class combination (and even more for humans).

If it wasn't for the fact that most options found outside the core rulebooks are outliers and, therefore, less common in the standard group, the act of character creation could become a very time consuming exercise.

It goes even higher if you're like me and add in AE, IK, the various FR books, DL, Star Wars, and so forth into the mix. The amount of options is staggering. At least I know the days of every fighter looking and playing the same are long gone! To me, that's a VERY good thing!

Yeah, if you include all d20 products, I'm sure the number of character race/class options would be in the tens of thousands.

Simply amazing...
