Orcus [Ghostwalk]

Illrein

First Post
I've been interested in the Ghostwalk campaign setting, and in all of the reviews/interviews I've read about it, they make references to Orcus. I understand that Orcus is the Roman equivalent to Hades, but was he published in some earlier product of some kind? I was just hoping someone would shed some light on this. I've only been in gaming for about five years.

Baraendur's link is an excellent repository of the history of the (A)DnD demon lord Orcus. In the terms of the rpg, the only thing he has in common with the Orcus of mythology is the name, no real ties to Hades (unless you wanted Hades to be another extension of the demon lord, not a bad idea).

Then there is there's little ole me too. Not quite the Orcus sage some are, but I like to think I know the old boy's mind set. ;) But just to keep it simple, Orcus was/is a demon prince of the Abyss, who has a fairly recognible portifolio that can make him seem godlike. (Course to some worlds he IS a god.)

If you want OFFICIAL information about Orcus, there are four sources to choose from:

1. The original 1st edition Monster Manual

2. The Forgotten Realms module H4: The Throne of Bloodstone

3. The Planescape module: Dead Gods

4. The new adult content WoTC book: Book of Vile Darkness.

The links and posts that appear earlier on this thread are not official D&D sources. I would avoid them if you can.

"Official" is for the anal-retentive. There's lots of good stuff floating around the web, as a matter of fact, you could probably have answered your question by judicious use of google instead of posting here.

Does everything have to be OFFICIAL? Well, I guess that throws my campaign out the window, since I use more UNOFFICIAL resources than anything else. I think the links posted earlier in the thread are quite helpful.

Orcus is awesome. Orcus just is.

And to completely contradict greymarch, I'd suggest staying away from the BoVD if you're doing anything to do with demon princes or devil lords. The BoVD Orcus especially is a complete mockery of old school Orcus(Orcus with the rippling pectoral muscles of Ren Hoek? COME ON!)
