Raiden is the Lightning God viewed through a Japanese cultural filter and Thor is the same Lightning God viewed through a Scandanavian cultural filter. Are they the same being? Ultimately no, the filters differentiate them significantly. In essence? Yes, the force/concept behind (Lightning God) is what ties them together as one being.

IIRC, this was one possible idea that was pitched in 2E's The Complete Cleric's Handbook; given that a cleric could worship a god, force, or philosophy, one possibility was that gods gained their power from the force that was part of their portfolio.

This idea can easily be extended to Orcus and his many forms. I won't bore you by restating everything said above using Orcus as a focus. But I thought that it might be some food for thought.

That sort of breaks down when you look at the idea of Orcus as a non-divine but very powerful demon lord though.

Nah, you see electomagnetism is the Lightning God (and some others) as looked through the filter of Science No gods there.

I think that it is possible for a filter to reduce the status of a being without breaking the system, essentially.

And as for your first comment: I had no clue on that one, I never bought the splatbooks for 2E. But thanks for the info
