(Yes, I meant the critical mass thing to be specific to play by post. Things proceed much more naturally in person, regardless of the number of people involved.)
Living En World is a play by post "persistant world." Many players and many DMs participate, and Judges make sure that things are done fairly across different games. (I.E. if one 1st level game gives a reward of 1,000 gold, another should not give 100,000.) The beauty thing is that when one game ends, you can use that character again even with a completely seperate DM. Since a relatively high number of PbP games end unexpectedly when someone becomes unavailable, this is really very usefull.
