OSRIC 2.0 Hardcover = AWESOME

Edit: Also, my understanding is that OSRIC was meant to facilitate publishing of new AD&D adventures that were compatible with the old system. It's not meant to replace the old books. Others will inevitably chime in with more informed opinions though.

That was the original intent, yes. I think they outdid themselves there. ;)

Well, finding the actual AD&D 1e books in. . .

a. Good condition.

for

b. Reasonable prices.
This surprised me so much that I checked out ebay. A cursory look finds over a dozen AD&D1 PHB for sell there, all for under $20, most for under $10.

I agree... it's not necessarily expensive, but free still beats that, I think, especially to new, casual or poor players testing the AD&D waters. For example, I played in a 4E LFR pick-up game earlier this year and even some of our regular, weekly players that loved the gaming experience had absolutely no intention of buying any gaming products (except beer or snacks).

If my players and I want to run a game, it's a lot easier for me to tell them to grab something that's still in production - either online or offline - than it is to ask them to prowl the secondary markets and find a deal on eBay.

At my local used book store yesterday they had a half dozen 1e PHBs, many DMGs, and even 3 Fiend Folios as well as other 1e hardbacks. They always seemed rather common around here, but Osric is good too. :D

Just a quick aside (but still on topic regarding OSRIC) -

Does Osric include information on ability checks?

I can't remember where those came into play in original AD&D - maybe a module, maybe Unearthed Arcana or the Survival Guide. Anyway, just curious.
