[OT] 2002 World Cup

I will follow Sweden by patriotic reasons, but I doubt they will make it past the group it got.
Otherwise, I will follow the South American teams because they play the games that are most fun to watch, the African teams because Im living in a dorm where 25 % of the population are African
and the Asian teams for their spirit.

I already have this written up, so hey, may as well throw it up. If you don't want it anymore, or if a Canadian's ranting about the beautiful game is nowhere near good enough, just lemme know and I'll toss it. ^_^
May as well make a thread for this, considering it'll be going for the entire month. And while its not a North American game by any stretch, its a passionate affair. Considering both of my teams choked something fierce in qualifying (Canada & Scotland), I'm just watching to watch England and Ireland suffer.
At the very least, I wouldn't mind just doing some basic football discussion. So ignore me if you will. ^_^
Regardless:
Day 1: Senegal 1, France 0. Single largest upset in World Cup History. France is the defending champs, Senegal has nothing to lose and its their first time here. And it was an unbalanced game. France couldn't figure them out, Senegal played their hearts out and earned it.
Day 2: Ireland 1, Cameroon 1. Not a lot you can say about this game. Ireland ties it up in the second half to gridlock the two sides. Even game, Ireland is lacking that punch that Roy Keane could have been supplying, but they aren't out of it by any stretch yet.
Day 2: Denmark 2, Uruguay 1. I fell asleep just before the second half (it was 4 in the morning!), but Denmark should do very well. With the France loss, Denmark now leads Group A; France and Uruguay are going to have to rush to catch up to them. One other note: My GOD is Uruguay a dirty team. Its like watching Colorado Avalanche hockey. (Egos, dirty play and kibitzing when something doesn't go their way).
Day 2: Germany 8, Saudi Arabia 0. Well, I think we have ourselves a WC favorite right now. Fuji just told me over AIM, and I looked it up. Not so much a football game as a clinic. It does make you wonder why a team like Saudi Arabia is allowed in over eliminatees Scotland, Netherlands, and such. Regardless, a massacre in every sense of the word.

Games today:
* Argentina / Nigeria. Group of Death fun! One of the world's consistant powers vs. arguably the best Africa has to offer.
* Paraguay / South Africa. Clash of styles. Stingy as hell Paraguay vs. the open South African side.
* England / Sweden. BOOOOOOOOOOO! Ahem. Sorry. Scottish blood took over for a second. But more Group of Death fun. The English have a lot to live up to right now, but can they keep their egos in check? Sure enough, if they die during this cup, Brittania isn't going to be a friendly place for the most expensive players in the world. On the other hand, Sweden's getting next to not attention at all, which I feel is a terrible shame. They're a great side, and England may end up with a bite in the ass from the Men of the Fjords.
* Spain / Slovenia. Spain... the perennial underachievers of modern World Cup history. They should do better. They really should. Yet they're proving to be choke artists, and this is holding over their heads considerably. Slovenia... I know nothing about. Another World Cup virgin against a powerhouse, a la Senegal. Will the magic be there? Well, if you're going to hope for an upset, no better side to play then Spain.
For BDTV, I'm Ryan Allan. Its gonna be some great footy.

I'm amazed that a day ago everyone here was saying "Don't expect too much from the German team" now everyone is saying "They're going to win it all!" Beating the team everyone pick to come in dead last does not a champion make. Germany still has some key injuries and without Scholl it falls to Ballack to be the lone creative force in midfield. And Jancker??? Please....
But, on the other hand, it would be a crazy party.
Senegal v. France was a great game (and I got to mail all my Francophile friends). Senegal lost in almost every statistical category (corners, time of possession, offsides) and still totally deserved to win the game--geat football! Interesting point made: would people pick this as "greatest upset of World Cup history" or Argentina v. Cameroon in '90? I might go with Argentina just because Cameroon had 2 players sent off and Argentina had its star player on the pitch, but I'll throw that out there for debate.
And don't count Sweden out! It's always found a way to beat the English team and if Argentina beats England, it's off to the winner of group A...and God knows who that'll be.

      All of the World Cup games so far have been really exciting and fun to watch for me... and that without any attachment toward any of the teams that have already played. 
      Of course, it'll all be turned up a notch for me when my three teams start playing after the weekend: Brazil on Monday (vs. Turkey), and Russia (vs. Tunisia) and the U.S. (vs. Portugal) on Wednesday.

The game was harmless, actually. Uruguay is known for (I like to watch their games just because of this
) playing tough. Punches in front of the referee are highlights of many Uruguayan games Gotta love'em, them rascals...
Not so fast. Germany has played not only a close qualifying round, but also some VERY bad matches in the past two years. (lost 1-5 to England, and many wins against poor countries were a pain top watch)
It's possible they go far, but also that they still go home after the first round. More than semis is not possible, I think.
Spain accidentallly won, but I think in the quarterfinals they will come to senses and lose to Japan or somesuch.
The Group of death is still open, though Argentinia seems to be one of two to advance, and the other three teams are keft to fight for second place - still, if Sweden beat the Gauchos and England lost to Nigeria (hehe
), all would be open again.However, England first loses to Argentinia, so they will have 6 points already.
France will have a hard way getting out of troubles. They need to beat both Denmark and Uruguay - I don't think 4 points will suffice. And beating denmark will be very tough, especially with 5 injured players from the match vs. Uruguay
