I was an ET2 and a RO in the USN. I went to NFAS, then NNPS, then NPTU to study at MARF in class 9204. Then I was a SPU and helped test the IDE, before I got out.

That was good.
Let's see. DC1(SW) in the USN. Stations at on a DD, and at an NTC, NTTC, NRD, NRS MEPS and NCCS. Held positions as a 9545, 9585 and was known throughout the fleet as a quad zero.

Gads I forgot how many their are, and thats all the ones I can remember right now. I know im forgetting a ton, but it has been a few years.

Many Americans like to see things in black and white, and they tend to construct systems of icons and symbols to reinforce their views.

That's humanity in general. All humans come up with symbology that encapsulates their world views.

Americans just happen to like acronyms more than others.

9-11 = Sept 9th
WTC = World Trade Centert
Y2K = Year 2000 (takes out only 1 number... silly ?)
ASAP = As soon as possible

Correct, except 9-11 referes to September 11th, not September 9th. How could anyone miss that?

Also K is a popular term for Thousand (or 000), and K^2 (squared) is used often for million. I've seen it plenty of times in business and math 'stuff' (for lack of a better word at the moment). 'Business X made 2k^2 in profit last quarter.'

My sincerest apologies to everyone, especially Tom and Morrus. I guess I'm just a little uptight today on the eve of the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. My cousin Michael was lost in the attacks on the Towers, as were several friends from college and high school, and I witnessed both of them collapse that morning from my office. Anyhow, I'm not quite myself - please don't take my stupid comments today as an accurate reflection of who I am.

Peace.

Hey, no apology necessary, Joe. It's a difficult time for us all. Hope my comments don't seem flip...I'm distressed at the prospect of reliving (in TV images) an event that still feels like it transpired yesterday...but I don't mean to attenuate the significance of those events in any way.

I'm sorry for your loss and I hope you're okay during the coming days. Hang in there.

I would like to ask the New Yorkers of the board about the supposed increase in sexuality and the search for more love and entertainment in New York. Some articles in many magazines and newspapers are portraying NYC people as getting out of their shells more than ever.... sex and fun becoming new priorities in a new fatalistic view of life. True or Journalist BS ?

A film with 11 directors telling different stories about the WTC (World Trade Center ) was released in the Venice Film festival... the name of the film:

11´9´01 (or 11´9´2001 not sure now)

Its a little controversial from what the newspaper article said... but seems neat. Directors from 11 different countries show a 11 min 9 sec length film about the attacks.

Also, the significance of associating September 11th as "911" (the U.S. emergency number, as another poster said). By many Americans, 9-11-2001 was considered the Ultimate emergency call. Also keep in mind things such as TV references (The formerly popular TV show "Rescue 911" with William Shatner hosting) and other references make it a very catchy phrase to Americans to refer to it as such.

I tomorrow do not look forward to the expected news coverage tomorrow. While I agree the even should not be forgotten, the expected "wallowing" in the imagery that some news organizations are planning is not a good thing, IMHO.

I didn't think you owed ANYONE an apology. I AM a conservative republican and I felt like Tom Cashel's comment was out of line and unfair as his "us vs. them" stereotype is not applicable to a very large portion of our population (there are probably more Americans opposed to President Bush's "war on terror" than there are people in Australia) "E Pluribus Unum" means something that most non-Americans (and many Americans who have never thought about it) can't understand.

I had a huge rant written out in response, but I let it got in respect of Morrus...all I'll say is if I continue to see deregotory remarks about Americans in general, I'll take my leave of these boards...It is just too much to have to hold my tongue all the time.

My favourite shortening thing was TLA - Three Letter Acronym. Isn't that just the most pointless thing ever? Coming up with a name for it, and then shortening it to an acronym.
I dunno, I myself have always preferred GNU...

GNU's
Not
Unix

Recursive Acronyms are fun. :)
