[OT] 9-11 / WTC / Y2K ... Dates ...etc...

I would like to ask the New Yorkers of the board about the supposed increase in sexuality and the search for more love and entertainment in New York. Some articles in many magazines and newspapers are portraying NYC people as getting out of their shells more than ever.... sex and fun becoming new priorities in a new fatalistic view of life. True or Journalist BS ?

Honestly, I haven't seen that behavior in my circle of friends and professional colleagues. We tend to stay closer to home now when we socialize - neighborhood bars, Friday and Saturday night cocktails at friends, that sort of thing.

A film with 11 directors telling different stories about the WTC (World Trade Center ) was released in the Venice Film festival... the name of the film:

11´9´01 (or 11´9´2001 not sure now)

Its a little controversial from what the newspaper article said... but seems neat. Directors from 11 different countries show a 11 min 9 sec length film about the attacks.

Not exactly.

From what I read, the eleven directors essentially take turns (with their piece) offering THEIR opinions on that day.

One Chilean director's piece says that September 11 1976 (i forget the year) the U.S. backed a coup that brought in Pinochet.
[I edited out my opinion -- did not want to offect Eric's Grandma or break the political talk]

Another 11 minute film has a Middle Eastern man explaning that since Israel and America are democracies and the people elect the leaders the people are responsible and are viable targets.
[Again I edit my political commentary to this flim].

I tomorrow do not look forward to the expected news coverage tomorrow. While I agree the even should not be forgotten, the expected "wallowing" in the imagery that some news organizations are planning is not a good thing, IMHO.

It's sickening. I don't know anyone who is interested in the media blitz we're going to have to put up with tomorrow.

And I'm not coming from an angle of wanting to whitewash it, to cover it up, neglect it, or forget about it, and I'm not feeling put out with 'patriotism' (a complaint common to many in the media within weeks of 9/11).

I can't figure out who the media think they are pandering to.

I can answer this one: Themselves.

News about news. The media are their favorite subject.

I, too, want to avoid most of the media hoop-la. The only thing that I think I want to try and catch is the interview on 60 Minutes II with President Bush. I did not even want to see that until I read a news story about the interview. (again an example of a news about news).

Although I have no idea what that sentence means, it sounds like it's political. So let's not do that, eh?

It is. In very broad brush-strokes:
(don't know if these need explained)
Conservative = right wing
Liberal = left wing

(hope I remember British politics from college)
Republicans = Tories
Democrats = Labor

Back to abbreviations... I understand that the Germans like abbreviations and acronyms. The Germans also have words that run into the double digits with syllables (not to mention letters), so that is understandable. What about the Netherlands?

Also, were abbreviations and acronyms common centuries ago? There's supposedly one acronym that I can think of that got it's orgins from Renaissance court documents, but I'm afraid I can't bring it up in a public message board.

As far as 9-11 goes, I think the terrorists were probably quite aware of the symbology. We Americans are reminded of it every time we think of the 911 emergency code.

I give it about 10 years before people begin assuming that the phone number 911 was inspired by the events of 9/11/01.

No, 4 to 5 syllable words are quite common, but that's because we combine our compunds in one word, ie. "telephonerepairman" (YUCK! It really doesn't work in English :D ).

The stereotypical long dutch word is "Hottentottententententoonstelling" A Hottentot (some 3rd world tribe) tent exhibition. Of course the 4 identical "ten" syllables are very silly, and it is a word you will never ever use, except in demonstrations of the Dutch language like these.

Oh, I don't mean to get into a political discussion, but when I read the right=conservative, left= liberal, I though that in the Netherlands the VVD, the 2nd biggest party (we have a multi party system) are right wing liberals... Is that unique in the world?

We also had a right wing populist who was outspokenly gay till last may, but then we had our first political murder since 1558 :( . Didn't agree with the man, but he didn't deserve to get shot.

It's a silly country, The Netherlands. I'll be missing it the next nine months though (I'm going to be living in Falmer, Brighton for one Academic year)...

Guys - I apologized to Morrus because I crossed a line - religion and politics are banned from discussion on his boards, and I ignored that.

I will admit, at first I was a little taken aback by Morrus's post - why was he singling out me and nobody else? - until I took a step back. Morrus didn't understand my post for a reason: I had made too many incorrect assumptions about the post I responded to, and subsequently more was going on inside my head than was actually happening on the thread.

I do want to take a moment to respond to Uller, however. In theory, I am your "opposite" in the sense that I am a liberal democrat, but I do see where you are coming from. I too have seen a lot of uninformed "anti-American" sentiment on various Internet message boards, but I erroneously let that experience taint my interpretation of a post on these boards today. Don't make the same mistake I made. I am not afraid to admit that I love my country, for the very same reasons of "from out of many, one" you have mentioned, but I think it is important to point out that the En World Community is indeed a cut above the rest, an international community of freedom-loving people who hold many of the basic rights that we do in just as high regard. No other RPG community I know of compares.

Peace on Earth.

I thought everyone in Holland was a Liberal ? Even those on the right included ... that is one country with very little restrictions. Which is great... I´m no fan of conservatives. What about the older people of holland ? Arent there conservatives in Holland ? Who are they ?
