1. The farther you get out of NY the cheaper it willl be. I don't know but if you booked the flights yet but it will be easier to fly into Newark, NJ. YOu can proabably stay somewhere near the airport (there is a Hyatt and others within a mile) that you probably can stay at for $100 a night or so. To get significantly cheaper you's have to go about 25 miles away. Newark is a 25 minute drive (w/o traffic) from NYC.

2. You didn't ask but Boston is about a 5-6 hour drive from NYC.

4. Chicago is atleast a 12 hour drive from NYC. YOu prettty much get on Route 80 and drive. It's a hike. Easy but far. Remember, Chicago is huge. Six or seven million people live there so lodging will be numerous.

Here are some words of caution from a native NYer (recently turned NJ suburbanite)...

1. Talk to a native NYer before you start looking outside of the city. Your hotel might be in a rough neighborhood and/or you might have to pass through a rough neighborhood to get to your hotel. If you have a car, I recommend Fort Lee, NJ. It's next to the George Washington Bridge which takes you into northern Manhattan.

2. Keep in mind that the road to Boston takes you through a few minor metropolises... rush hour trafffic can add an hour or two to a 5-6 hour trip.

4. Chicago is at least 16 hours drive (non-stop). I know - I did it when I drove to GenCon from NYC in 1999.

I've stayed at those places:

Blue Rabbit International House
730 St. Nicholas Avenue
New York, NY
212-491-3892

Sugar Hill
722 Saint Nicholas Avenue
New York, NY

Hosteling International
891 Amsterdam Avenue
New York, NY
212-932-2300

The two first ones were (two years ago) at $20 per night, the third one at $25 or $30 per night. I think you can get rooms for four at the later, and it looks less shabby, though I liked the atmosphere of the two first (same owner). The cheaper would be:

$15 (never tried, though).

I Love NY Now More Than Ever

I would try Travelocity for lodging. I don't know if you have AAA in England but they also a great resource. Credit card companies are also a good place to look for deals. I would plan to spend a 100 bucks american a night though.

I agree - you should try to get a deal online somewhere, and do it soon. Do it right now, in fact - August is a BIG tourist month here. Hotel prices here average at about $200 a night in NYC. Also, try to avoid staying near the airports (Kennedy or LaGuardia) - prices are higher there.

It's too bad you aren't coming sooner - the Brooklyn Museum of Art has a Star Wars exhibit up now with all kinds of costumes and stuff from the movies, including C3P0 and R2D2. It runs through July 7th. I'll also be sure and send you a list of "must sees" before you visit.

And I hope we get a chance to meet up when you come here!

The area commonly called "New York City" is a pretty big place, actually - including Manhattan, Brooklyn, and depending who you talk to, often Queens as well.

I think I am insulted. Depending on who you ask Queens.

Everyone with half a brain knows that Staten Island is the borough that gets dumped on (literally). Heck, they voted to join Jersey. Why any sane people would want to do that baffles the mind, but these are people who choose to live in a garbage dump, so I guess they aren't very sane.
