[OT] Anything to do in Newburgh NY?

After a quick search on the internet (I work in a library, finding stuff is my job :D ) I found the following in the general Newburgh area. I don't know if they are still in business or if they even carry RPGs, but I'd give them a try.

Stonehenge Comics, 50 RTE 17K, Newburgh, NY 12550 (845) 565-5190

October Country 5 Cherry Hill Rd., New Paltz, NY, 12561 (845) 255-1155 (Like I said in a previous post, I don't know if they are still in business, but I found this listing, current as of late 2001)

Main Street Comics 33 Main St., Pine Bush, NY, 12566 Ph: (845) 744-4841 (and look at that, in my home town no less!)

Dragons Den Comics & Cards Poughkeepsie Plaza 2600 South Rd., Poughkeepsie, NY, 12603 Ph: (845) 471-1401

Also, once you get to school, I'm sure you'll be able to find others who game. Ask around for any Science Fiction clubs, gaming clubs, anything like that, I'm sure you'll find something.

Good times...

Mt St Mary College
One of my sisters went there. Since all of the girls there dated West Point cadets, it was nicknamed Mt St Mattress. Guess it worked - my sister married her cadet, & he became an army doctor to boot. They are still happily married & raising an army of rugrats of their own.

You guys are making me all nostalgic for Orange County now. I still have a lot of family in the area - a brother & sister in Walden, a sister in Pine Bush. My Dad was a West Point grad, so I got to spend a lot of time there too. I have fond memories of rooting on the Army basketball team with my Dad during the Coach Kryzewski era. And nothing beats the pageantry of a college football game at Michie Stadium. I guess it might be time to make the pilgrimage back to the old homestead....

BTW, did any of you guys run cross country? I'll never forget the County & Sectional meets at Bear Mountain State Park. Man that hill climb in the middle of the race was sheer murder! And then rocketing down the hill while people were falling down around you right & left . Ah! Good times... ;)

Wow, it's weird to see people who actually know the area I work in. :D

I work in Middletown, haven't found a decent gaming store there yet. There had been one a few years ago, but it went out of business. And October Country is out of business, or it may have moved. Went up there to see what I could find, there was something else there iirc. And Media Play leaves alot to be desired. Asked if I could put up a card looking for a gaming group and I was told that I should put an ad in the singles column of the local paper.

I don't really know the Poughkeepsie area, so can't say much about the gaming there (I live up in Sullivan county, Poughkeepsie is WAY too far from me.). NYC is only a little over an hour away if you take Metro North (local train system between the tri-state area and parts of CT).

Good luck.

I first learnt to play D&D in Newburgh... Ontario that is. :D It's weird seeing people talking about Newburgh, even if it isn't the Newburgh that I know. ;)

The Newburgh that I grew up in was once known as Rogue's Hollow (waaaay back in the 1840s-50s) because of the number of taverns for such a small rural village. I used to have fun with people when they asked me where I was from. The look on people's faces was priceless when you answered Rogue's Hollow. :)

Cheers,

Been gone almost 19 years now, but I grew up in Goshen (class of '84). Played my first RPG's in the basement of the Presbyterian Church in the center of town. I thought it sucked then, but I recently drove through and it seems in misty retrospect a cool little town. Still no game store though.

Speaking of Orange Plaza, remember Book & Record? It was basically a stationery and tchotchke store with the lamest selection of both books and records you could imagine. For a while there in the 70's that was the only store we had within 20 miles for either. (Myeah, and we liked it that way!) I bought the scandalous first printing of the 1e Deities and Demigods book there, which almost redeems them.

I tell ya, those who long for the days of the Mom and Pop store don't seem to clearly remember how much they sucked.

For game stuff, we mostly made seasonal pilgrimages to the Compleat Strategist in NYC. Figure they're still there, but it's probably still a hike, less'n you got one o' them new-fangled automocars.

84'? sorry Barcode but I betting you remember stores that were long gone before we started to really notice :-P

Hey, now - the Book & Record in Carmel (where I spent my high shcool years) is where I got most of my AD&D 1st edition modules, and my monthly DRAGON mag. I'll always be grateful to it for that, at least. :)

And the B. Dalton at Orange Plaza is where my folks bought me the D&D red box when I was in middle school. (I grew up in Highland Falls, right next to West Point.)

I'm cut-n-pasting that list of Mid-Hudson stores, and sending it to my brother, who lives in Brewster and goes over to Danbury for gaming books. Thanks for the research!

Book & Record. I bought my 1st Rubik's Cube there! They were always 3rd in line for RPG stuff after B. Dalton and the toy store. I always felt like they were watching right over my shoulder when I shopped there, and there was a really creepy woman who used to follow everyone around and offer her opinions on whatever you were trying to look at. It was always a pain to look for RPG stuff, because it was tucked way in the back corner and usually had lots of boxes piled in front of it. When they finally went out of business, they had a huge blowout sale and somewhere came up with lots of old wargames, rpgs, and books that were on a big clearance. I ended up buying a bunch of games & books that I still haven't played or read, just because they were so cheap.
Speaking of Book & Record and the Orange Plaza, does anyone remember the guy who used to hang out in front of B&R or CVS all the time? I always thought he looked like Gene Simmons from KISS. Tall and thin, long black hair, black jeans, black leather jacket with a "Choose Death" patch on the back. He hung out there for YEARS! I guess today he would be considered goth, but when I was 12 he scared me. Years later when I was in college I ended up friends with his girlfriend, but by then he was hanging out at the new Galleria mall down the road. Found out he was in a death metal band called Bent Sirkis (http://www.pablochang.com/picts/gallery/00000585_lrg.jpg).
Ah, memories...
