MYTHUSMAGE.COM WANTS YOU!

I'm getting a web site together to showcase my talents and present d20 material. (Among other things.) The first will be a number of variant basilisks, to be used in place of the standard basilisk.

Which means I need an artist. Said illustrator must be good, knowledgeable about dinosaurs, and willing to work cheap.

How cheap?

I don't have the money to pay any kind of fee, so it'll have to be for exposure. In return for my use of your artwork, you get a link back to your site/gallery, and first consideration should my work see hard copy publication. In addition, you retain all rights to the art work. Getting credited as the art director for Mythusmage.com goes without saying.

I'm looking for good quality color and black & white work. Of the style found in books on dinosaurs, birds and animals. That sort of thing. No anime, manga, comic book, fantasy, etc. I'm looking to establish a certain look and feel for the site, and the right art would certainly help.

If this looks like something you'd be interested in, drop me a line via the email button below. If you have samples you'd like to show me, ask first, or send me an URL I can go to.

BTW, I am a cruel and evil man. So if I send you a rejection email saying you need to take some art lessons, you go and sign up for art lessons. I want the art on my site to showcase the best the artist can do, so I will be strict. (Makes his chance of getting a paying gig much better.)

Thanks for your time, and I hope to hear from you artists.

comsidering how important art is to such projects you might want to consider pushing some of your budget over into paying for an an artist.

no offense mm, but if you hunt around, you will find lots of writers and very few really good artists. :D

i see a lot of calls for "really good artists willing to work free"...makes me wanna start a webpage for good artists looking for writers willing to match words to their vision for free :)

btw, if anyone else wants free artwork, they might wanna think about having situations like these fold both ways...i mean, if someone has what they consider great art, should they ask for your writing first? maybe just to see if you need writing lessons? if they reject you on the grounds that you nedd writing lessons will "you go and sign up for writing lessons"?

most artists wortht heir weight have a waiting list for their work.....and aren't gonna wait in line for someone with any kind of attitude to slam them. this is an awfully harsh attitude to take for someone who is essentially begging free help.

also by mythus mage "In return for my use of your artwork, you get a link back to your site/gallery, and first consideration should my work see hard copy publication."

and as for this part...how about a solid percentage of your first sale, should it ever happen, instead of first refusal for someone who essentially gave you a free hand? there are lots of free forums to show ones work where you aren't jst earning credit for soemone else.

As a freelance artist and illustrator, let me say; I hope you get no replies on your post. Professionals don't do business that way, and you don't tell artists to take art lessons if you don't like their stuff, the normal company thanks you for your time and says it is not what they are looking for. Attitude doesn't really impress too many potential freelancers, especially for free. You get what you pay for. I find it amusing how all these companies expect illustrators to work for free. Free doesn't pay my bills, and getting a paying gig down the road as an offer is just sad. Not to mention that you should have this posted in the d20 Publishers section only.

Have a nice day :)

...which is great if you're trying to steal He-Man's magic sword to rule the world from Castle Grayskull. Not so great if you're grovelling for a talented artist to work for free....

Such warm and encouraging responses.:D

Well, if some folks don't think they can perform up to my expectations...

Getting serious here. Damn right I'm being choosy. I want a site that says to people, "Here's something worthy of your consideration." Whether they go for the writing, the art, or both, I want them to have something good to look over. I have looked through Gaming Frontiers#3, and I don't want art that bad. I want good art for my work. So I set standards. High standards. If you think you can do work that will satisfy me, then we can talk about it.

So if you think you're good enough for an old grouch like me, drop me a line. This may be your chance to show off your work to a wider audience than you currently have. Even if you are professionally published. (Remember, more people visit the typical d20 website than buy a third party d20 offering.)

(Besides, free publicity is worth more than a $1,000.00 in sales.:))

Such warmth. So don't submit. Don't hurt me none. I'm also not that impressed by your status as a professional. Having seen some of what passes for art in all too many d20 publications, I'm of the opinion that standards need to be raised drastically for d20 artists to even qualify as semi-professional.

And for your information, Hellbender, there are professional artists out there willing to work "pro bono" if it means garnering publicity.

BTW, I did stipulate that the artist keeps all rights. All I get is permission to exhibit the art on my site. That's it. If he finds a buyer for it, good. It's free publicity.

Add to that the fact I'm looking for an artist. Not artists. One person gets to help establish the look and feel of Mythusmage.com. One artist will be responsible for helping to establish the reputation of my site, so I want the best I can get to share that honor.

To put it another way, I want somebody good enough to make potential paying clients say, "Thisis the artist I want for my big project. So I set my demands high, while offering nothing more (or less) than exposure.

And if my projects make it to the rarified realms of professional publication, the artist is given a place ahead of any competitor.

Hellbender, no matter what you're doing the art for, you do your best. Free or pay, you do work of high quality. That is the mark of a professional.

So, yes, I make demands. Because I want the artist for Mythusmage.com to get responses to his work that will gain him well paying jobs. I want him to succeed, and to do that he must do his best regardless of the venue.

One more thing. I'll have the kind of day I damn well feel like.:D
