[OT] Board Game suggestions?

I have to say it>:

Settlers of Cataan is horribly overrated.

And Furn - if you gave us more info about your group's likes, etc, the recommendations could be more laser-precise. :)

Currently, all we're doing is saying which games WE like.

We can't guess which ones YOU will like.

Dungeon!

The perfect game to play when you can't get enough players for D&D would be Dungeon! It is an excellent gateway game to introduce casual gamers to D&D. Think dungeon crawl D&D in a boardgame format.

TSR put this game out a long time ago and it may be difficult to find now. There is a set of metal miniatures that you can buy for the game that also adds a few new classes.

Another fun game is Aliens. You basically re-enact scenes from the movie Aliens. Each player takes control of a few Marines and tries to survive the scenario. Pulse rifles, grenades, flamers and machine guns. Fun for the whole family! It might be hard to find.

History of the World is another fun game. You play through 7 (if I remember correctly) historical periods and try to earn the most victory points by holding on to territory and improvements.

War at Sea and Victory in the Pacific are two very basic wargames that are easy to learn and fun to play. I'm not sure if you can find these games anymore.

A game this is fun and easy to find is the new futuristic Risk game. They implemented rules to speed the game up and it really adds a new dimension to the game.

Board Games

I probably play more board games than D&D actually.

For 3-player games, I would lend my voice to the tide of people suggesting any of the Settlers games (I personally like the spaceship one the most).

I also think wizwar is great, if you can find a copy.

The cheapass games are also quite good. Kill Doctor Lucky, Patent No. 1, and any of the fast food themed games are all good, and I think all work well with 3 players.

I also really like Chrononauts, the time travel game. See

I have to pimp Mob Wars, that is great fun. It's even better if you get into character and use the Cagney voice when telling what you are doing.;)

Salutations,

Fair enough, but general suggestions and opinions from other d&d players is more or less what I was looking for.

I like to game- regardless of what form it takes. The only preference I like is that the final outcome is more in the control of the player's actions then a random roll/shuffle/etc. But I do play random games.

I guess the only real limit is that I don't drink- so drinking games are pretty much out.

Settlers of Cataan is horribly overrated.

I have been looking for some negative comments on this game (they usually help me out more then the positive ones)- what do you not like about the game?

BTW- I told my player who really wants to play Axis and Allies- that if he buys it, then he can bring it and we will play. heh.

Thank you for all the suggestions

You could go the cheap route. I mean *cheapass* route. :D

They don't exactly have cheapass games in most department stores, but you could pick up 3+ games for the same price as a regular board game. More variety!

Fun games. Most of them are short, like 30 min. to an hour, or slightly longer.

I just started getting into them. Kill Doctor Lucky is good, for one.

No, I don't work for cheapass games. :p

I'll chime in for Cheapass Games as well. My current favorites in the Cheapass line would be U.S. Patent No. 1, Witch Trial, and Deadwood. They certainly produce some of the most creative games out there, and you can't beat the price.

Our group plays more card games than boardgames... they're more easily portable from house to house as well. :)

Our favorites are:

Graverobbers from Outer Space
This one is great if you like those old cheesy horror movies (or even those new cheesy horror movies). Each player builds their own movies with characters (like the High School Vice Principal or the Annoying Little Brother), locations (like the Cabin in the Woods or the Funhouse) and props (like the Chainsaw or the First Aid Kit), and attacks their opponent's movies with monsters (like Dracula or Carnivorous Slugs). There are also special effects cards, which are used like instants in Magic and can be played by anyone at any time.

Munchkin
Someone else mentioned this one, and I wanted to second that. It's all about killing monsters and taking their stuff, and keeping your buddies from doing the same, but it's all in good fun... with monsters like the Wight Brothers and the Gelatinous Octohedron and treasure like Kneepads of Allure and the Boots of Butt-kicking how can you go wrong?

Fantasy Business
You're a medieval shop owner striving for market share from the local adventurers. Corner the market on Swords and Spell Scrolls and demand outrageous prices or undercut your opponents prices to steal his busniess from him. One of my favorite parts of this game was playing with the sack of coins it comes with. :)

Wizard
This is kind of like spades without partners and with a variable trump suit. Wizards and Jesters add another level, with Wizards being the super trump, and Jesters the lowest of the low.

Royalty
It's a cross between scrabble and rummy, plus you can steal your opponents words to make new words of your own.

Just remembered one more that I bought and enjoyed on recommendation from these boards:
Once Upon a Time
The players use the fairy tale elements on the cards they draw (like witches, cottages in the forest, and talking animals for example) to tell a story, with the goal of leading it up to their Happy Ending card. Other players can interrupt however and take over the story to lead it to their own happy ending.

Hope these help. :)
