[OT] Board Wargaming

Azure Trance

First Post
After watching Thirteen Days, starring Kavin Costner, it made me think about the boardgame Diplomacy in when you submit orders on what you suspect the opponents are doing - are they telling the truth, or is it a decoy? They do the same, and it makes for lots of fun.

I once had another board game by avalon hill called Rise and Decline of the Third Reich. Massively large with a something 50 (ot was it 150?) page rulebook. Costing $45, I lost it before I ever played it D: Good thing I never got it's companion pacific Japanese set.

But I'd love to get back into it again with my D&D friends if possible, although I don't know what other games are equal or better then the previous ones I have named. Course, you can never go wrong with RISK, but variety is the spice of life.

So, suggestions - or better yet, any websites where wargamers congegrate so I can be up to date in the sector?

I just found out that Avalon Hill sold rights of 3rd Reich and Empire of the Sun to Avalanche Press, the company in the light for all of it's cheese covers.

Hello!

Yes, thanks, Scarab. I was very happy to see the recently-posted news on the computer Harpoon4 at that site, issued by no less than Larry Bond himself.

Here's another one for you, Azure Trance: the Web Grognards. They concentrate more on tabletop, rather than computer, wargames, though there are computer wargaming links there as well.

Have fun with it! :)

Try Magic Realm from Avalon Hill. It has a lot of fantasy elements that RPGers can get into. It's out of print, but available from eBay

World in Flames!

World in Flames!

The ultimate strategic simulation of the entire WWII conflict.

Not for the faint of heart.

Edit: actually, IIRC, Third Reich was Avalon Hill's response to original WiF, and IIRC again, was generally regarded as inferior.

Edit again: Actually, I Now Recall Better, that a company that may or may not have been Avalon Hill relesed a new edition of a game that may or may not have been Third Reich, in response to original WiF.

On other end of the spectrum, Axis and Allies is widely embraced as one of the best beer and pretzels games out there.

PS: I may be being a little pedantic, but I would class Diplomacy, Risk and A&A as being (fine) strategy games, rather than true wargames.

Yes, A3R and Rising Sun are alive and well, and have an incredibly active online player base, along with an essentially OGC online ruleset, which may or may not eventually turn into the next published version of the game :)

Yes, Dippy is the ultimate strategy game, since there are no random elements at all involved - this also makes it one of the most hated games ever, and should never be played more than twice a year unless you want to evolve an ulcer. :D
