[ot] College textbooks online?

the wife unit uses half.com and has been paying 1/4 to 1/10th cover :)

good luck

I buy all of my textbooks from half.com. I typically spend a bit less then half the amount I would for used texts ordered from the school bookstore. Note too, that I'm picky I could buy at half.com for even less.

Can't you just find someone that goes to the same classes and 'share' the books? Each paying 50/50? Or (i might be shot for this) copy the appropriate pages? I did an airplane engineering course 10 years ago, the books where so expensive that i was happy that my parents where paying. It's ridiculous how much some of these books cost! (especially for younger people that can't get a decent job in the hours they don't have to attend college...

That's the beauty of being an English major. Some of the Anthologies I had to buy were expensive ($70-80 -- 8 years ago), but when you get down to it, Shakespeare is Shakespeare, Emerson is Emerson. You can go to a used bookstore and buy a 50 cent copy of a lot of them. I paid a lot less for my books than many of the brainiac students (math, science, etc.).

Of course, I still have a hard time picking up a book of any sort and reading. Still suffering burnout.

that stinks man, books are one of the most expensive parts of college. The worse is when you hardly use the book (at least in my case anyway).

I know my university has a price matching guarantee, they will not be outpriced on any in-stock book. I haven't had much luck finding book much cheaper online. Bite the bullet and get the ones you *need* (hint, hint).

Hey, doesn't your university have a CLEP program where you can skip the general classes you've already taken?

I'll second this. If it's possible to CLEP out of some courses, do so. They are graded on a weighted scale of 20-80 points, and most courses take about 50 or so to pass. If you know half the stuff you need for the course, you can test out it. I've taken CLEPs for three History classes, and plan on taking some more for an Economics and Marketing courses, maybe American Literature.

The tests cost $50 each from CLEP, and an additional $15 (recommended) administration fee charged by the university. $65 for a chance to completely get out of a course, as opposed to $50 - $100 for a book, plus tuition, and having to "waste time" in the course? It's worth looking into, at least.

Have you checked for flyers and such around the campus? I know a lot of people try and re-sell books, especially the ones for classes such as the ones you have to take - general education requirements and the such. You might be able to find them for a significant discount.
