OK, honestly, my four year old wants 2 things out of one of these characters:
1. Don't be mean and scary. You're already huge and scary, so there's no need to exaggerate that. It takes about all the courage she has to walk up to one of these things.
2. A hug, or at least a wave. If she's gathered enough courage to go up to one of these things, she wants a little acknowledgement that she did it right and that the big thing noticed her.
The headbutting in the crotch thing is probably mostly an accident--kids just happen to be about that tall. Sometimes they get kind of jumpy when they are excited and hugging something huge and scary. If you get down on one knee, it moves your crotch away from head height, and makes you a little less intimidating.
