OT: Do you hate Telemarketters as much as I do?

I haven't had people do that to me, so I can't say. :)

Anyway, I don't think any of us believe that they do it to harrass people for fun. But we believe that they do harrass people, and whether they have fun or not is immaterial. They should get a real job. Yes, you might have to do some real work for a change, but it won't involve calling people up in their private homes, interrupting whatever they're doing in an attempt to sell them golf towels.

Y'know, I'm not really trying to defend telemarketers (see some of my earlier posts), but you keep saying "get a real job." When was the last time you looked for a job? The job market is pretty soft right now, so cavalierly saying "get a real job" seems kind of naive. It's not that easy, especially now.

It depends on what field in which you are looking for a job. I could most likely get another one rather promptly.

In the case of telemarketing, it is not a position requiring specialized skills - there are many service-oriented jobs that don't require any set skills either.

True, CH. Some areas are worse than others in that respect, I know, and I suppose if you're actively hunting for a new job, I can forgive you. :)

I have such a problem, with all of you blowing how much they bother you, reasonably out of proportion.

How much they bother me is up to me to decide, isn't it? I'm sure some people could get called five times a day and not be bothered by it. I'm not one of them.

There isn't a whole lot of point me saying anything, its mostly been said, and you have not waivered in your distaste for them, or their job, its hard to tell what you dislike.

I dislike their job and dislike telemarketers as a group. I do not hate individual telemarketers _AS PEOPLE_, I hate them as telemarketers.

If you have such a distaste how bought you do something about it, instead of further harrassing telemarketers, they are only going to get people to fill their place. And i really don't think you understand, how much they do sell. they are never going out of business any time soon.

What, exactly, CAN we do about it? Nothing, really. Read the thread for the stunning stories of success about people who have tried to "do something about it".

Just a thought, do you approach people and treat people who shove propaganda in your face? while out side your house, or at your car?

Are you refering to the door-to-door religious types, for example? I make it clear they aren't welcome, and I'm comfortable in my beliefs. If they try to ask "Well will you just hear us out" or similar, I inform that that I consider them to be tresspassing as of now, and close the door.

That's true, but telemarketing jobs often pay a bit more than other service-oriented jobs of the type you're speaking about. Yes, many are forunate enough to have job skills which make them in demand, but right now the job market is soft - the evidence is out there, both statistically and anecdotally. That extra bit of money from a telemarketing job is a lure for those who are out of work, and especially those who have run out of unemployment. And yes, I do know that many telemarketers are college kids - companies recruit from colleges because they know it's something of a captive audience, and that college-age people may not be aware of how crappy a telemarketing job is.

Aren't you a student?

I work hard every day- and don't want any of my spare time distracted by telemarketers. That is not unreasonable.

We are not talking about commercials or ads. The act of the phone ringing pulls me away from what I am doing- and it used to be sleeping. You think being woken up and having your rest disturbed is reasonable?

As i've said, people don't do it out of the pleasure of harrassment. Its a job, i used it as a job to fill in time between work, which is not always easy to find.

Motivation is besides the point.

I have. I have had to alter my life to avoid them.

Now that I learned about the no-call list in New York- I have signed up.

Just a thought, do you approach people and treat people who shove propaganda in your face? while out side your house, or at your car?

Oh, yes, I do. :)

The last time was a couple of months back when I had a.. err.. discussion with some protesters in a small town north of me.

I also nearly got fired for not biting my tongue when the institution I worked for tried to force a socio-political program on all employees that I did not agree with.

I treat the world the way I wanted to be treated. I leave it alone, until it forces me to deal with it.

Boy that sounds similar to how I live life, or try to...

No, it isn't. Not as long as you're paying for it.

And not only are you paying for your phone, but you're also probably paying for someone else's phone, as well. I think the "Universal Connectivity Fee," or whatever it's called, is to pay for the phone lines of the poor, or those in rural areas, or senior citizens. That's a big chunk of my phone bill.
