Third, someone mentioned commercials on network TV. My question is, what the heck is with cable TV? People are paying $30 to $60 a month, AND on top of that, they have to pay for commercials as well? I remember twelve years ago, last time I had cable, that I never saw commercials on most of the channels. Now, it seems only the premium channels don't have commercials. I think, if I ever get cable (or, more likely, satellite), I'll have to get a DVR, just so I can record and skip over commercials. (Of course, now these DVR companies are selling commmercials that will air while fast-forwarding or pausing. Sheesh.)

Okay, enough rambling. :)

Hey i though had long gone from our little corner of the net. Good to see ya :)

You bring up a really good point though. There is way too much advertising in our society.

Between TV, Telemarketing, Print, Internet, Movies etc we are way oversaturated with adds.

We need a voluntary pull back or a volunatry rule that says
"Unless it pays for programming/bandwith/magazine no adds."

I wish all the hucksters would just shut up.

I paid my money now I get to see the movie, no addds. I paid my cable bill. No adds

Magazine? Thats a wiggler-- An online zine.. No adds if I pay

1- sometimes thats the only job people can get do to illness injury and being plain messed up. Since we don't have social welfare ala Europe unless you want them robbing you or homeless you need to give them something to do.
Or prehaps you would like to employ them?

Oh, that takes the cake.

So I could be left in peace from the phone- I should pay even more money in taxes to these people, who by your description, of which, 70% are loser drug addicts.

Oh, please sign me up.

But why would I want the peace of the phone then? I would not have any money to enjoy my life with.

2- What would you rather do? Work 8 hours in the sun for $64 US or sit at a phone for 5 and make the same amount or more?

I did work in the sun. It is called self-respect.

Well, for the record, I just got done with the second one today. It's 1:45 here.

I have days where I only get one, but normaly it's from 2-4 a day.
Oh man, that's ranging up to two minutes of your time lost a day! No wonder you're put out!

Ugh. I can't believe I got annoyed enough with this thread to chime in. Really, just tell the person pleasantly once that you aren't interested. If they continue, just hang up. Don't be an ass, and don't try to string them along just to waste their time. Like a small handful of people have said here, telemarketers aren't calling you because they like to inconvenience you. None of them puts on their headset at the start of a shift and says "Oh boy, I hope some smartass screws with me or threatens to sue or just swears at me today!" I'll bet a good number of them don't like their job, and move on when they're able to. I used to work directory assistance for a cell phone company. There's a really high turnover there because so many customers - customers who are CALLING, not BEING called - are jerks on the phones. I quit after a couple of months, once I could afford to. I can't imagine the abuse the telemarketers who have to make the calls takes. I seriously doubt that it's a job that attracts "money-hungry jerks" - unless you consider students, single parents, people who need a flexible second job, and people who can't afford the luxury of waiting for their ideal job to come around to be money-hungry jerks. They're people trying to get by, ideally with a minimum of BS from people who find it rewarding to belittle them. I seem to be in a minority here, but I'd feel pretty petty and ashamed of myself for doing what a lot of people seem to be proud of here.

Fine.

That sword cuts both ways.

I have the right to say anything I want to THEM in return, short of the half dozen things free speach doesn't cover (Death threats, for example).

Freedom of Speech baby...

Thats true. You do infact have that right. If you want to be a bully and a thug be my guest.

BTW I love your Seal very cool

It is freedom of speech- not a right to be listened to.

Last I checked nobody was advocating the stance that you must sit there quietly and listen to the sales pitch, so nobody is claiming they have a right to be listened to.

And nobody claimed they have a right not to get verbal abuse, I only pointed out it's childish, immature, and hypocritical when concerning people who are so focused on respect.

No longer collecting, but still here. After all, there's interesting non-RPG discussions like this one. :)

Heh. Every month, I get Reader's Digest. What with all the mailers that fall out and give me paper cuts, and the stiff cardboard mailers that stay in and make it hard to turn pages, I get very annoyed. I generally go through the magazine and pull out any page that has advertising on both sides. I end up taking out about 30% of the pages.

At least some have admitted it, playing with the Telemarketer is just being childish. If you really value your time so much why don’t you simply utter the phrase mentioned above, they hang up, they (the particular company) stop calling and you can go back to your life instead of wasting your oh so precious minutes toying with the person on the other end of the phone.

Lighten up. Fighting back against invasive advertising is a form of mental health.

Of course somebody else must, else Telemarketing wouldn’t be a viable business.

Its an especially viable business when you manage to reach the infirm and the elderly. Just because you get a minimal piece of the action doesn't mean that you have to try and justify the action itself. Or maybe it does. I don't know you, truth be told.

As far as people who find them annoying, that’s cool, but when you toy with them you prove how wide your childish streak is, how you time isn’t as important to you as you proclaim.

Belittling people who enjoy playing as being 'childish' is a funny stance to take on a forum (usually) dedicated to pretending to being a group of fantasy characters seeking fame and fortune. ;)

And people who claim they are the scum of the universe because of the job they hold need a reality check, they aren’t going around stealing babies or such, they are calling you, an experience that can be over in 30 seconds if you handle it correctly

If it hasn't become apparent to you from the responses you receive here, then I'll spell it out: People hate having their lives interrupted by somebody whose only interest is in parting them from their money. If you think this is somehow a bizarre reaction, then I suggest you have much to learn about people.

With every right comes the duty to use it responsibly - that old, "With great power comes great responsibility" thing that we love Spider Man for :)

Is being needlessly and intentionally rude a responsible use of your rights?

The moment they call someone in their home- and that person picks up- they have forced themselves to be listened to. Duration is not the issue.

Just for the record - I'm not sure any of you actively involved in this conversation are actually moving this dialogue forward (I confess I skipped the down through the last five entries because it was all getting a bit repetitive)
