[OT] DVD player help?

I couldn't decide if this went in Software and Computers, or Movies... Then I realized, it didn't really belong in either, so...

I recently bought a Sony DVP-NC685V... And had to take it back for a new one, because the playback was sometimes jerky. The new one is exactly the same way, however. And now I'm thinking it's something with the basic system.

It's not a constant thing, it just happens now and then, but on tons of DVDs. It's like... Almost like it was having a slowdown in frames per second. It only ever lasts for a second or 2, but it's annoying. I'm My last DVD player didn't have things like Progressive Scan or a few other supposedly playback-improving features like this one does, and I'm wondering if one of these is the problem...

Any advice?

I've tried tech support. They are classicly useless.

Progressive Scan will only improve your vertical resolution if you connect the dvd player to a progressive display such as a computer monitor. Your TV is in either case interlaced, and will display progressive as well as interlaced media as interlaced.

Your best bet is to ask your quesion at www.doom9.org

The occasional appearance of a dropped frame is normal at the layer change point halfway through most DVDs, but if it's more frequent than that your system has a problem. I'm not familiar with your particular model, but the days of player-to-DVD incompatability are mostly behind us, which makes your problems even more troubling.

Have you tried different connections to your television, changing the audio streams to DD5.1, DTS, etc? If it's a player problem, changing stuff like that can sometimes highlight exactly where the problem is, though it shouldn't be your job to debug a consumer electronics device.

I say take it back for a different model if you can't resolve it easily.
