This is such great news that I have to tell as many people as I can. Being a parent and living in Salt Lake has brought this really close to home. It was such a relief to hear that she was alive. We all feared the worst. She was found in a suburb of Salt Lake. She appeared unharmed.

Elizabeth Smart was taken out of her bedroom, which she shared with her younger sister. The little one pretended to be asleep, but heard the kidnapper say that if Elizabeth didn't go quietly he would hurt or kill her younger sibling. The investigation was focused for a while on a family friend, but then on a man who had done repair work for the family. She has been gone for months, and I think assumed dead.
Unharmed? I doubt it. And I also think the things she has gone through will probably not be widely talked about. I know that, if she were my daughter I wouldn't let the press anywhere near her. In fact, I think I would change the whole family's names and move to another state. That girl is gonna be screwed up 10 ways from Sunday.

Not to mention she was abducted from a low-crime city from her own bedroom, and has affluent parents.
Her parents and local community did most of the work though, keeping her name in the news and getting coverage for the situation.
I would be interested in learning the circumstances as well though.

There is only so much news you can put up in 30 minutes or less on the national news program, unless you have one of those 24-hour news network channels. Only local news would cover what is relevant in your areas. Elizabeth Smart happens to be one of a few lucky stories that caught nationwide attention.

Someone is bitter. As mentioned above, it takes a lot of work from family and friends to stay in the national headlines. Also the presses angle against the husband caught a lot of attention (instant guilty profile) and kept ratings up. Also because it happened in a low crime area many people could feel symathy and empathize with the horror.
You are right though, we had two missing black girls from Chicago last year and they did not get nearly the press of similar cases where middleclass white children went missing.
