I just wish they had gone with the 4 hour version.
I am disappointed greatly.

Why? Did you not like the movie? Otherwise I don't see how you can be disappointed. IMO, the movie's still great, whether it's nearly 3 hours long or 4 hours long. And on the DVD they're gonna be adding in all the cut scenes. From what I understand, that'll come out to about 3 hours and 20 minutes, or so.

Thing is, you really can't have a 4 hour long movie in theatres. Lord of the Rings wouldn't have made the amount of money it has had it been over an hour longer. How many fewer times would theatres have been showing it in a day had it been that length? It might've only been able to play 3 times in a day, 4 times MAX. As nice as a 4 hour long version would be, they can't realistically make a movie for theatres that's that long and expect to turn much of a profit. Remember, the trilogy cost $270 MILLION to make. They already made one hell of a gamble on the trilogy, laying out that much money ahead of time for 3 movies without having any guarantee that it'd pay off. Had it not succeeded then the studio may've very well gone bankrupt! To make the movies 4 hours would've cost who knows how many millions more, and would've resulted in a lower pay off at the box office, as they'd only be able to show the movie a certain number of times in the day.

As nice as it'd be, I'd rather the folks who were good enough to make these movies not go bankrupt over it. Which is why I'll be buying both DVD's. It's a small contribution, but the best way to let Hollywood know what you like is with money.

Two comments:

First: Only 30 extra minutes ! Damn. I would have wanted many, many more scenes, and a total length of 5 hours !

Second: Have to wait for an enhanced version ? Want us to buy both ? 4 hours of stupid materials noone cares about but only one new half hour of movie ? Grr. I hate when people despise the "fans" so much as to just reduce them to cash cows. I think I'll just boycott it. And I urge everyone with a bit of self-esteem to boycott it as well.

Start budgeting now!

I will buy both DVD versions for this reason: I loved the pacing of the theatrical release, and while I'm looking forward to viewing the extra footage on the extended cut, I fear the movie will be slowed considerably (though enjoyably) because of it.

Or maybe it's just because I'm a big ol' fanboy. Take yer pick.

i'm sure that peter jackson said "now, let me make one thing clear - i absolutely hate these fans that came and saw my movie 4 or 5 times. let's really stick it to them with the DVD".

gimme a break. yes 2 dvd's is a bit of a rip-off, but only if you buy both.

and that boycott talk is just like the "one-week" Star Wars:AotC boycott: utter nonsense.

very very cool!
i'll likely end up buying both copies as well (despite having found a pirate dvd on the sidewalk ... i just couldn't stand the wait! :D) plus i'm looking forward to going back to theatres on friday to see (for the 5th time!) the new TTT preview being added to the end of the reel. does that make me a fanboy? who cares! i love this film! heck, i even liked the green faced Galadriel!

What "one-week" Attack of the Clones boycott? I've never heard of such. I only wish it were true: I could easily go on opening night! :p

Not hate. He (or rather, the marketers working on his movie) would rather say:
"We totally own them, they come look at the movie again and again and again. It's pretty clear they have lots of cash to give us, so here's a little trick to make them give away all the cash they can, we'll not release the extended DVD-version they're all screaming to see immediately, rather we'll keep them frustrated with DVD that don't contains the missing scenes, so they'll buy the DVD again when we will include the missing scene."

That's what I meant. I saw nothing wrong with supporting a movie I like by going to see it two times, and even convincing my mother to go see it (friends don't need to be convinced). Nor with buying the DVD when it's available. Why not several times, to make gifts. I'm not against buying something several times if I liked it. But, if a marketer come up with a strategy aimed at making people who liked something to buy it several times, then I'm angry.

And for Star-Wars... Well, I don't feel concerned, I don't really like it. It's great for videogames, but I ain't fond of the movies. I've seen Ep I out of curiosity and to accompany friends rather than staying lonely that evening, but I would rather have seen Ghost Dog. Or read a book. And that's what I'll make for Ep 2. End of SW digression.

Oh man, JD – I thought you’d have got wind of this by now. Some people on these boards (and other online communities) are going to show their disdain for George Lucas (presumably because they thought Ep I was bad) by not going to the new movie until one week after it's out. They reckon that George will crap his pants if the opening weekend isn’t like what it was for Ep I. I tried to explain that a) George Lucas doesn’t really care that much, he’s got more money than he knows what to do with; b) though they like to think they’re important, this little internet community boycott will amount to nothing; and c) good movies need those continuing receipts. So I say fine, don’t go on week one…go on week two, three, four, whatever. Make this movie as successful as possible and make it stick in the theaters as long as possible.

I don't see why you're complaining. You get gobs of material with the first DVD release -- two friggin DVDs!!! Yes, you get *more* with the second release, but so what? So buy the second instead of the first. After all, you get everything from the first on the second, right? Plus two extra DVDs? Why are you complaining? Hell, you don't *have* to buy anything!
