[OT] FREEDOM FORCE! (discussion)

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix the crash I am getting between the tutorial mission and mission 2?

I must assume it has something to do with a movie or cut-scene of some kind. So what kinds of things should I be looking to tweak to get it to work?

Graphics card is brand new, DirectX is updated, running W2000, 128 memory, PIII 600 or so. The only thing I can think of is my sound, which is integrated on the motherboard.

Any suggestions?

Meanwhile, Fallout 2 is now RUNNING a-ok since installing the new graphics card! (Expensive way to play an old game... I know...)

Wulf- you do a min or full install of the game? Something could have gotten hosed on the install. Try full install (if you havent or didnt). See if that works. If not, try turning the sound off completely for the game and see what happens.

I have the game and have run it successfully under Win 98, Win2K, Win2K server, and WinXP Pro.

Have you tried checking out the tech forum for FF? I did a search, and I found other people having the same problem as you. Except, in the end, all of them gave up and returned the game.

Metus, thanks much! There are a few suggestions there I will try.

I will let you know how it turns out (cause I am sure everyone is just dying to know...)

Dammit, I just want to hear Sagiro's voice-over... Is that so much to ask? I'm tryin' to support the community here!

Interesting... I have on-board sound too. I'm starting to think the VIA Technologies on-board sound is not completely DirectX 8.1 compatible. I'm basing my opinion primarily on the fact that VIA doesn't have any specific WinXP drivers at all, which suggests that the stuff they do have is rather old (ie: older than WinXP).

I figure the problem must be either the video card or the sound card. I have a Geoforce 2 MX 400 and VIA Technologies on-board sound, and I've heard general "bad stuff" comments about both (ie: the Ti series is better, VIA inhales, basically vague rumors). I might be getting a sound card today... I'll post another message if I can get FF working with it.

WOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO!

Well, the messageboard that Metus recommended had a few suggestions-- uninstalling the character editor, uninstalling/reinstalling the game, and reinstalling the drivers for my card.

Of course, the option that finally worked was the drivers. I didn't figure I would need new drivers but, lo and behold, after a 45 MEG driver update, the game finally works!

I know, I should have started there... The drivers were updated in April, so it was a fairly new update. I would definitely recommend going back to the manufacturer's website and checking. I guess DirectX was updated fairly recently...?

Of course I didn't get it all worked out until about 11:30 last night and then I was up until 4:30 or so playing... Tee hee! An hour and a half of sleep and already I can't wait to get home from work and do more! More!

Everytime the Mentor opens his mouth to say something, I say to myself, "Gee Brain, what are we going to do tonite?"

And then El Diablo showed up, with an attitude that was every bit Bat Manuel...

Can't stop chuckling...

Glad you got it working. It's a great game; I played it through in about a week and am now letting it sit for a while before I go back and try again with a few custom characters.

The user-made skins available online are already pretty amazing--there are skins for just about every comic book hero you can think of. Once I go back to the game, I may have to import a few "classic" heroes for my squad.

Along those lines...

Can someone familiar with the game tell me which of the included voices might be well suited to custom Marvel characters?

Spiderman, Wolverine, Daredevil, Hulk, Iron Man, etc.

And finally... Which voice(s) did Sagiro do?

Well, a lot of people use the Ant's voice for Spiderman. With the editor, you can now add custom voices. I've read on a few threads of people ripping spiderman's voice from the cartoons and other games and then using them in FF.

http://www.modforce.com is the offical modding site where you can download the editor and all the doc
