Where in the UK are you going - London, elsewhere? what do you like doing? What kinds of things would you like to see?

I can try to give you some additional ideas once I know a little more about what you like :)

The Royal Armouries in York are well worth a visit. They have live demonstrations of stuff like fencing and fighting with sword, lucern hammers and the like in full armour, jousting sometimes in summer.

If your in London the London Eye is a must IMHO.

The Royal Armouries is in Leeds not York last time I was there. :)
The Houses of Parliament/Palace of Westminster is well worth seeing, you can get in without an appointment, it's free, and outside summertime there are rarely queues (don't bother in the tourist season).
I like the Imperial War Museum near Waterloo, but not everyone does. The big museums in London are all free currently, so worth seeing several - animatronic dinosaurs in the Natural History museum are good.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

If you get a chance while in Germany check out the medieval city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It is a fairly small city and its large perimeter walls have been fully restored so it retains its medieval charm. I really enjoyed my visit there in 1997, it was quite memorable.

Here is their official website:

Whitechapel, natch! Though perhaps JTR's old stomping grounds may be TOO touristy... I've heard you have to book the JTR walking tours in advance, they're so popular. I'd love to go to the UK someday, just to do this...

Leeds, York there all the same once your the wrong side of the Pennines.... (whoops) :)

Naturally... since in Lancashire all parts of Yorkshire look like heaven compared to the local terrain :D

Hi all,

thanks for all of the great replies so far. I have been trying to reply to my post but I keep on getting "no thread specified" So I decided to try again when I got home from work :D

I am not sure where exactly I will be going yet so I was wanting some ideas to steer me in the right directions. I didn't want to miss out on good stuff thanks to local knowledge!

I like live demonstrations but in winter there might not be too many. It's not a D&D site specific holiday but I figured we are in some ways like minded individuals and from all over the world!

As a long time UK resident (ie all my life), and a confirmed Northener, I can recommend:

* York - especially the Minster (voted one of the 7 architectural wonders of the UK). Good 'ghost tours' too. Roman walls, and a small castle. Visit the 'York Dungeon' if your stomach's up to it.

* North Wales - the best castles in the UK because Cromwell didn't destroy them. Caernarfon (sp?) and Conwy are possibly the best - Conwy is a brilliant example of a medieval village that's grown near a large castle. Warwick castle is good too.

* Hadrian's Wall. The wall is amazing, the forts are mostly wall lines on the ground, but still fascinating.

* Tintagel is worth the effort if you visit the Westcountry. 'Merlin's Cave' is simply amazing.... When you're passing through Somerset, don't forget to visit Glastonbury and Wookie Hole.

* The Peak District, for some very nice scenery and great caves (Castleton).

* Cumbria - just because ;) Pavey Ark (Langdale) always reminds me of the back door to Moria !

* Scotland - the further north the better. Avoid men kin kilts playing bagpipes - such things are for chulrlish tourists. Loch Ness and Castle Urqhart are worth it. Glen Affric is superb. Glencoe is outofthisworld.

* Cambridge. Great city. There's a reconstructed Saxon settlement somewhere near there too.

There's so much to do and see here. I've spent 30 years doing it and still haven't seen half of it !!
