[OT] How Proud I am of NYC

First Post
The last major blackout to affect NYC was in 1977. Although I was born 6 years after I've recently heard tons of stories about what happened during that blackout.

I must say how proud I am of NYC. Unlike the previous blackout there was no looting, robbing and killing.

Time and time again in the face of all adversity and trouble New Yorkers pull together. Over the last 12 hours i've heard countless stories of people pulling eachother out of elevators, climbing 14 stories or more to bring water to old people. People getting in the middle of buzy intersections and directing traffic with no flashlights (like I did myself though it was while the sun was still up). Crews of people driving around brooklyn searching for pregnant women who were walking home.

I just cant express how friggin proud I am of everyone in this city. This time there was no terrorist threat, there was no danger from the outside world tying to kill us. It was just damned bad luck and we all banded together to make the best of a bad situation.

Thats what Newyork is all about folks...thanks what its alll about.

I have to agree. The people in NYC rawk. I remember the blackout of '77 (I was 8 years old) - thankfully NYC is a very different city now than it was in the '70s.

I heard Mayor Bloomberg on the radio this morning saying there were 16 small fires during the night, attributed to candles, and no fatalities as a direct result of the blackout.

I thought I heard about 1 death due to the blackout. It was a 40 year old male who had a heart attack. Not sure if the rescue team just couldn't get to him in time or what.

Having lived 5 years in NYC in the late 90's it does not surprise me at all how all New Yorkers pulled together and helped each other. Despite thier reputation most New Yorkers are very nice people.

Due to the blackout? How about "occured during the blackout"?

It was said that due to the blackout a 40 year old died of a heart attack. Meaning that somehow if the blackout hadn't occured he might have either lived or not had the heart attack.

I miss New York.
This morning when I was watching the news, I was thinking "I wish I was there, so I could be part of that." Maybe I'm crazy, but I wanted so badly to be able to help people, and here I was stuck in Virginia.

Yea he died cause he had a heart attack during the blackout. If not for the blackout he would have lived.

This blackout is being hailed as the largest blackout in US History.

Yanno, one thing I gotta say is why do all these record breaking "first time" "largest ever" events have to happen in MY lifetime. Yeash.

Give me some first times like landing on mars :-p

More power is coming back on in nyc btw.
