Looks like a juvenile detention center that is willingly funded by the families of the offenders rather than the general tax-paying public.

And this is a big social crisis why?

Oops, sorry, that may have bordered on political. For that matter, doesn't this thread border on political? I vote that it be summarily executed without its constitutional right to a trial.

With the exception that the "juvenile offenders" are there solely because their parents felt that this would "be for the best". The article cites kids who are in because they couldn't get along with their parents - hell that's 95% of teenagers on the planet.

Also, behaviour modification to this degree is not just detention. When cults do this it's considered dangerous.

Anyhow, as to the politics of the thread - I never imagined that this would have a political element, but now that you mention it, I can see it. I didn't post this to debate the rightness or wrongness of the institution (I did it more out of moral outrage).

I doubt that most could afford it.

Behavior modification comes in many, many forms. I personally don't approve of the methods used at the place described, but I neither approve of the methods of a drug dealer that modifies a child's behavior through narcotics.

It's definitely a controversial method that will probably be sued into oblivion the first time someone doesn't come out of it convinced it has worked properly...or someone dies.

I wrote a very emotional response to the thread, then took a break from my computer to relax a bit. I will not post what I first wrote.

Anyway, moral outrage sounds appropiate for me, yup.

Hmm. right now I'm looking for the part of US law that gives the parents the right to sign over all of the childs rights. Let me know if you any of you find it:mad:

Not all, but 49%, anyway. Is it illegal to transfer guardianship of a charge? We'll have to hear from a legal expert on that one. Does seem kinda fishy, though, doesn't it?

Um. Wow...

Moving away from what could perhaps turn into a political debate...

This Tranquility place could be a very cool setting for a creepy d20 Modern game, or perhaps even better, CoC. Think of all of the emotional turmoil that just .... resides in a place like that. Imagine if people had been killed there. Angry ghosts, malevolent entities... and of course cultists who feed off of the suffering.

Nice idea, actually, Trev. :) Hurmm....gears are turning...

As to the politics, yeah...I'm assuming this violates some fundamental human rights, which, of course, is debated whether or not 'children' actually HAVE....

Also, I'm assuming it violates ENWorld's 'no politics' thing, being from the Guardian and all...;)

Though this works perfectly over at the Nut. :)
