[OT] I'm back from San Francisco...

...and wanted to thank all who answered my earlier thread about "stuff to do".

I had a great time. People always say what a beautful city San Francisco is, but that doesn't really do it justice. It is a really beautiful city. The various neighborhoods all had their own character, but still seemed part of a "whole"

(I've got to get a thesaurus. I tried to think of a term that meant "more than beautiful" and came up with really beautiful :))

Anyway, Alcatraz was a blast...except we went early in the morning and were completely socked in by fog. Couldn't see a damn thing further than about 10 yards from the shore of the island:)

For the record, I could SO EASILY have escaped from Alcatraz.

Inescapable my ass!

Ahh, to have been born in an earlier time. I would have been known as "The Man Who Escaped from Alcatraz", instead of "The Man who can Drink an Entire Bottle of Scotch".

Aw well, diffrent eras breed different folk heroes:)

The City Lights Bookstore was all I hoped it would be as far as their stock, but I thought there would be more of a crowd of, I don't know...beatniks. Or Poets. Or anything but the group of well dressed yuppies that seemed to be milling around the place like termites.

I was going to pick up "Dr. Suess Goes to War", a retrospective of Theodore "Dr Suess" Geisel's WWII political cartoons. Did anyone have any idea he was a poltical cartoonist?

In his one-panel comics he was a ruthless, two-fisted proponent of kicking Hitler's ass.

But those one-panel comics still looked exactly like the work of Dr. Suess.

Man, now I wish I had picked it up :(

I didn't go into the Exploratorium, but holy crap that Palace of Fine Arts is an impressive piece of architecture.

Finally, whever recommeded The Cliff House, thanks again. It was a wonderful experience. I wish we had come a little earlier and seen more of the view, but it was exactly the kind of place I was hoping would be recommended.

On a final note, I had a Krispy Kreme donut. It did not compare favorably to Canada's own Tim Horton's. Dipped in frosting? bleah!

On another final note, I would move to San Francisco in a heartbeat if there was the remotest chance I would be able to afford it (there's not), so I hope you residents know what a really special place you've got there:)

From Vancouver...

well I am glad you did not try to Escape from Alcatraz, 'cause the waters here are COLD and the currents are deadly...but it is possible to do it.

glad you had fun.

Yeah, actually I guess te waters are pretty cold.

In fact the whole place was prety cold for being "Sunny California" (tm) ;)

Welcome back T.B.,

How was the traffic in San Fran? Did you get in any Cabs?

B.T.W. It is "Sunny Southern California". Them Northern folk wish they had our climate. :D

Do we know how lucky we are! Of course, it's what we pay for... damn things are expensive out here. Why do you think so many of us move to Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver?

As for sunny, well, perhaps you're mistaking us for Southern California -- that's the thing you see on TV all the time, which isn't really representative of the rest of the state. It's certainly mild in SF compared to a lot of the rest of the world, but we're no LA.

You can get it at Powell's book store, url = http://www.powells.com/search/DTSea...War&pokey=skeptopotamus&Search.x=0&Search.y=0 new or used, hardback or paper. And free shipping on orders over $50.

And it's just up the coast from SF....well, in Portland, OR. :D

There was a special about the good Dr. on TBS years ago (mid-90s?), which explored his work. That's where I learned that Yertl the Turtle = Hitler. The show had a really good gospel-y version of Yertl the Turtle which I can still hear in my head....

If I ever get to the Frisco area, I really want to go and see the Winchester house. Too bad I've never seen a floorplan, or I'd use it as an adventure setting.
