[OT] It's alive: Lab to spawn new life form

You know that whole apocalyptic end times thing? The whole "men as gods" thing, with the lightning and the thunder, and the end of time, and stuff?

Iiiiiit's here.

Hmmmm....If ever I have seen a more Modern Campaign storyline spawning newstopic...I dont remember it.

This could be a REALLY interesting plot hook in a d20 Mod/CoC game.

Bah. From what they said, it's normal run-of-the-mill genetic engineering. If removing a few genes and adding some others is "creating life", then it's nothing that hasn't already been done commercially.

If they want to impress me, they'll have to make that thingy from scratch. Using cut copy and paste is too easy.

Smith and Venter told the Post the lab-dish cells would be rendered incapable of infecting humans, strictly confined and designed to die if they escaped into the environment.

In all my years of watching Sci-Fi, nothing good ever comes from such a disclaimer.

Originally from the article
The Post said the scientists acknowledged the project could lay the groundwork for creating new biological weapons and that they have to be selective about publishing technical details.

Ah, so all the failsafes are in place. I feel sooooooooooo much better now... ;)

From what I read, it IS.

They're assembling the DNA one amino acid at a time.

My prediction is as follows:

The first hundred times they try it, the cell fails to divide, and dies within 24 hours.

The second hundred times they try it, the cell lives long enough to divide once, and then both copies die.

The third hundred times they try it, the cell lives long enough to divide a few times, but eventually the cell line dies out due to massive, increasing mortality rates.

The fourth hundred times they try it, the cell grows wildly out of control, consuming nutrients faster than they can be added, and dies out due to accumulation of waste products.

At certain points during the fifth hundred times they try it, the cell line escapes, but is unable to survive, and dies out before doing significant damage.

The 601st time they try it, the cell line escapes, and in spite of all of the controls, kills off the scientists (so noone is familiar with the work) contaminates the laboratory (so noone can get to their records about what they did) and goes on to destroy 99% of all life on earth.

I figure each "try" will take about a day, all together. That means we've got less than two years before the superplague arrives....

If you ask me, this whole affair is irresponsible in the extreme. Why the heck are they using a base organism that can infect humans, and cause ILLNESS!

Feh, baby steps. I want my designer retrovirii now dang it. :) Thankfully, at least someone is working on basic and advanced recombinations.

From what I read in the article, that's not what they are doing. If they were assembling DNA "by hand" - and I frankly have no idea of how it could be done - then why is there a base creature?
