there's always Diplomacy. :D

myself, i've been itching to teach a bunch of people Republic of Rome so i can play it again.

btw, for board war games, the internet hub is grognard.com. they also deal with strategic-style board games that aren't strictly about war.

I am really open to anything. I guess I am looking for something with a little more depth than, say, Risk, but doesn't necessarily take six months to finish (like Axis and Allies can). Something a bit more than just armies battling, but where I can still get some satisfaction from crushing the Ukraine (or something similar).:D

If you want a battle type game, I suggest Battle Cry. It's based on the civil war, and the set includes numerous scenarios representing famous battles of the war. You can also easily do random set ups or create your own scenarios.

"Risk 2210" is much more in-depth than original risk. There are cards, commanders, etc. Alliances are important. You can conquer the moon (!!!!). We have had a great time with it. The best thing about it is that is (I think) 5 turns long, so you don't have to wait for someone to mop up the entire world. You simply add up the points you've accrued during the game and whoever has the most, wins.

As I said, it's a great game.

Risk 2010 - is a lot of fun and can create diverse games.

Silent Death - spaceship table top combat game. Quick fun and simple to learn

Milborne - Racing card game for 4 players

Carcassone is light, fairly quick game, but I find it highly replayable. It works well for as few as two players.

I also enjoy Samurai Swords/Shogun. This is in the same family of games as Axis&Allies but superior in my opinion. It is a fairly long game however, and you already stated your opinion on long games. With four players or so the diplomacy aspect keeps the gameplay a little fresher over time than A&A.

HeroQuest was always a good time, I added all sorts of role-playing elements to the basic ruleset without much fuss. Good for when D&D seems a little too much work, but a similar dungeon-crawly experience is desired.

Settlers of Catan with the Seafarers expansion

Axis and Allies : World at War Expansion ! Best expansion of them all, and we have played them all.....many times
