I used to be a hunt-and-pecker. Then I got to the point where I knew where all the keys were and no longer had to hunt for them. So now I'm...just a pecker.
Seriously, though, I am a self-taught typist. I still only use my two index fingers when typing (and occasionally a thumb for hitting the "shift" key when capitalizing), but I'm faster than most "normal" typists I know.
And when my index fingers get tired, I can switch to my middle fingers without too much loss in speed.
Get better soon, Mouseferatu!

Heh. I know that style: The owner of a private school around here, a man in his early seventies, uses it, too - and quite well, at that. It's very amazing to watch a man of his age type that fast, let me tell ya!

(I'm faster than him, though - but other than him,
I grew up with computers.) My father uses it, too, come to think of it, but he's not as fast...
As for normal typists: Most people aren't that fast, yeah...

(Even most professionals aren't that fast - at least by my standards.

)
Myself, I'm only partly self-taught; I also had classes for a year (obligatory in one of the schools I went to - not that I minded...

). Before these classes, I didn't use all of my fingers, either, I believe.
