600mg or 800mg of motrin 3 times a day. (that's 3-4 motrin, standard anti-inflammation dose) for 10 days.

Hot packs for about 15-20 minutes, twice a day.

That's what I do. Years ago I fell off of a 12 foot ladder and landed on my upper back/neck. I still get serious neck pain and stiffness from time to time, and let me tell you, Motrin is a lifesaver.

Ok, here's what my parents always tell me to do when my necks bad: Fold 2 bath towels, long sides together
Roll both towels up, starting from the short side to other short side.
Put 2 rubber bands on both rolls, near the ends
Lay on your back on the floor, place one roll under the small of your back and one under your neck
Lay like that for maybe 20 minutes (I usually fall asleep;) )

Hope this helps & let me know if it does so I can let my parents know they helped someone on the internet... they'll get a kick out of it.;)

Ibuprofen (such as Advil) and a long, hot bath. I like my pain remedies simple. :D

(If the source of the pain is something serious, go see a doctor. Which I'm not, in case you take some ibuprofen and keel over dead. ;))

How you are sleeping can make a big difference. From everything I've read and have been told by my doctor friend AuroraGyps has a good suggestion.

Sometimes the roll for the small of your back is dropped but the one for your neck is always there.

Sounds like a pinched nerve. Will take a little time to heal. In the meantime :
Ibuprofen (I probably was way off on the spelling of that but you know what I mean) is good.

Also, hot baths, but only if you have one of those neck support pillows to rest your neck on, otherwise the bath can do more harm than good.

And if possible, get someone to give you a neck massage with warming lotion. Professional if possible, (ie. someone with training who knows exactly where to apply pressure)

Another thing, is take note of how you sleep. You may want to rearrange the pillows, or get new ones , because a lot of times, neck pain stems from sleeping in a position that's not good.
Sneaky thing is it *feels* fine when you go off to sleep, but when you're out in dreamyland, the pain comes for you...

And of course if that doesn't work, you could always have someone cast cure light wounds on you and fix the pinched nerve.

Wait? Would that work?

Anyway, hope you feel better.

I'm a big fan of the theraputic massage myself. My gym has them fairly cheap, so I indulge myself. Look around, you should be able to find a place which won't scalp you. Even a chair massage will be sufficient since it's only your neck.

Possibly, but let us not engage in "net.diagnosis". We aren't doctors. And if any of us are, we have not examined the patient.

If the problem is a simple muscular strain, then the advice already given seems pretty sound to me. But, as all those bottles of over-the-counter medication say, "if the condition persists, see your doctor".

One note - if you don't actually have lower-back strain, the rolled towel in the small of the back is contraindicated, especially if you're at risk of falling asleep with the roll there. Over-stretching the small of the back when youdon't need to is a good way to cause problems, rather than fix them.

The roll shouldn't be so big as to make the lower back stretch really, just for support. I tend to need the roll when lying on the floor because I have a very bad sway back.
