[OT] Naming a child Arwen

A guy here at my work named his kid (and this is not a joke):

Vegas Cashman Rockefeller

That is his real last name.

Can you imagine that kid going through life with that name? Arwen is perhaps more normal compariatively!

Now if you had said you were going to name your boy Sauron....hmm....

If you like the name, I say go for it -- Arwen is a pretty cool name. She'll probably be raised with a plush Cthulhu in one hand and a PHB in the other, so she might as well have the name to go with it. :D

The folks I've known who have unusual names seem to like them, ribbing and early-life travails notwithstanding. I loathe children, but I've often thought that if I ever had/adopted any I'd try naming them after characters from fantasy fiction -- or even PCs. ;)

I am curious what the overall thoughts of the board is on this.

The situation is as follows: My wife and I are expecting Child Number 3 (don't know sex yet). My son is named Aiden and my daughter is Afton - so we would like to keep the A name thing going if possible.

So, if she is a girl, I would like to name her Arwen. But frankly, I am concerned about how the world will react to this - and the amount of grief that she might get later in life.

I have always like the name - and felt that she was a minor enough character to get away with it - until the movies came out..... Now I am not so sure - so what do y'all think????

(and no, if it is boy, I will not name him Aragorn :D )

Phew. I used to work with a girl named Eowyn, her brother was Eowyn and the other one was Aragorn. There may have been a sister named Galadriel too.

Arwen is a squeaker but it won't haunt her whole life at least.

And its not as bad as some gaming buddies who named their daughter "Wista" an acronym for Wisconsin Transit Authority!

It's a lovely name. If you and the missus like it, then I say use it. There's nothing bizarre, offensive, overly silly or likely to result in ridicule, about the name Arwen IMO.

...but just so you know, we named our second son Griffin :).

Names are names. I dont know anyone personally with a "different' name, but as for me, id most certainly name kids after book characters (although Darkwind, Firesong, and such might not work too well, Skif, Elspeth, Roald, etc might do....) Just dont go too off the wall and take a name such as from the Dragonriders of pern series. (who names a kid Jaxom? or Fallarnon? Fax?) There are some really nice names (especially celtic ones) out there that id love to use...if i ever have kids.

Go for it. It's a beautiful name, and a fairly simple one too, unlike Galadrial or Aragorn.

A friend of mine wants to name her daughter Caligula, just because she likes the name and is a big fan of villians.

I used to game with a guy named Alpha. Needless to say, his younger brother was named Beta. No joke.

Compared to some of the names people stick to their kids, Arwen is pretty and refers to someone beautiful and timeless.

My girlfriend told me about the twins who visited the rec center where she used to work: Lemongelo and Orangelo.

When I was TSR's web guy, someone wrote in to see if it was OK with us if he named his kid Cyric. Yes, he wanted to name his son after an insane evil god of murder and death.

Sheesh, if only half the people put as much thought into child-naming as you, there'd be far fewer miserable kids in the world.

there's a young readers book called The Great Gilly Hopkins, it's about a girl whose full name is Galadriel ...

just some info for ya
