[OT] Naming a child Arwen

For example, my oldest's name doesn't appear on the top of the SSA list. But the year she was born, it was the #1 name for Asian girls in the Bay Area, and in the top ten for Asian girls in NYC.

My middle child's name is a very common Jewish girl's name, but seems to be very unusual in the general US population. (Though, interestingly, several girls in our area whose families are from Mexico have used the name.)

Which is to say naming conventions vary a great deal by who and where you are.

I think its just best if you invent a new name that no one will associate with anything other than your child. I plan on calling my first son "Phroado" to avoid any such unpleasantries.

When I was named, Joshua was an unusual first name. Now it's been in the top ten for boys names for several years in a row in the US. Luckily, at least, I'm just about the oldest Joshua I know. My kids:

Spencer Joshua Dyal -- a classic name, not much used today, but not at all odd. Works really well.

Jessica Michelle Dyal -- my wife changed her mind at the last minute from Breanne -- Jessica is kinda a common name, but it's pretty for a little girl, and won't wear out when she grows up. She'll have to always know a few other girls with the same name, most likely, though.

Alexander Williams Dyal (I call him Zander, my wife says Alex) -- another classic name (literally, from Classical Greece) yet not one you see a lot.

Name my wife likes but I rejected: Morgan (sounds like a boys name to me, she wants it for a girl), Cameron (means crooked nose -- I couldn't name a kid crooked nose) and Jordan (also, boy's or girl's name: can't tell.)

Names we're considering for the next time around: Boys: Logan, Aiden, girls: Breanne, McKenna. Names that are unusual but not in a "that's really weird" kinda way, just in a "you don't hear that very often" kinda way.
