There are also sites that will break names down by ethnicity and region.
For example, my oldest's name doesn't appear on the top of the SSA list. But the year she was born, it was the #1 name for Asian girls in the Bay Area, and in the top ten for Asian girls in NYC.
My middle child's name is a very common Jewish girl's name, but seems to be very unusual in the general US population. (Though, interestingly, several girls in our area whose families are from Mexico have used the name.)
Which is to say naming conventions vary a great deal by who and where you are.
