Sure.

Hellsing. Hellsing. Hellsing. Get it? :)

Hellsing is really a very cool show. Sorta like a World of Darkness vampire game or something. Set in modern-day England, it's a very plot-filled story about a group known as the Royal Protestant Knight Orginisation Hellsing, led by Lady Integral Wingates Hellsing. They are a semi-governmental secret orginisation that is dedicated to destroying vampires. In order to do so, however, somewhere in the history of the group they aquired a vampire willing to fight for them. The Hellsing orginsation is also at a sort of "cold war" state with the Iscariote Institution, a secret branch of the Roman Catholic church that also hunts vampires, and has their own "ace in the hole", although that I will leave for you to discover. As well, someone has figured out a way to make "controled vampires" through some technological process, and the vampire problem is getting out of control. And come on... any group that has the motto/oath "In the name of God, impure souls of the living dead shall be banished into eternal damnation. Amen." gets a gold star in my book. :) I _think_ It's finished it's run in Japan, although I think only the first seven episodes have thus far been translated. If you have it, watch it now. If you don't have it, get it and watch it now :)

Magical Nyan-Nyan Taruto. Don't ask me WHY I watched this... I don't remember who gave it to me... but I did. I still have no clue what it's about, I think I missed something... But it's funny at times. Complete at 12 episodes, all of which are subbed.

Hana Yori Dango - It's not new, but a lot of people have never seen it. Now, what I'm going to say might turn some people away, but bear with me... It's a soap opera done right. Complete (long ago complete) at 52 episodes, all of which are subbed. You can download it (if you have the patience) from fumeianime.com. The movie isn't part of the same story arc, it's a retelling in a different setting.

One that's been out in America for a long time, but I'm one of the few people localy who has ever heard of it, is Roujin Z. It's a semi-serious anime... That is, it has a very serious message, but told with some humor. I couldn't begin to describe the plot, but I'll just mention... One of the key plot details is a sentient, top-secret, nuclear powered, military developed, transforming, self-mobile, over-protective hospital bed. Take that as you will. :)

Angel Sanctuary is another one that's been out for a little while in America but hasn't really caught on. For good reason I suppose. All that's out is a 3 ep OAV, which is just a little fraction of a 20 volume manga series. The manga is quite good (I have the first 10 volumes... It's only in japanese though, so be sure you have a way to get it translated :) )... So is the OAV, what there is of it, but the biggest problem is there isn't enough. Still, it's a good watch... Unless you run away screaming at animated portrayals of incest, transvestites, and messed up portrayals of real-world religions. Then stay far away. Far, far, far away.

Re: giving subs away

When I get a series on DVD I've previously had on fansubs, I give the fansubs away to a "needy" anime fanatic, of which I know several. If it's a rather large investment (Such as if Hana Yori Dango was ever licensed, as It's around 20 tapes), I might ask for some token amount of money... like a quarter what I payed for it or something, but normaly I just give it away.

But that's only if the american release didn't butcher the script.

Forgot to mention: Magical Nyan-Nyan Taruto is one of those shows like Cardcaptor Sakura... It's for children, and will give you both diabetes and advanced tooth decay just by watching. You have been warned.

Hmm... that makes you the second person to tell me to watch Hellsing... guess I better.

Jormungand's Current List of Anime to Watch:
1) Ranma 1/2 Random Rhapsody Volume 7 when it comes in on Weds, hopefully
2) Hellsing 1-7
3) Cardcaptor Sakura 20-28
4) The Irresponsible Captain Tylor 15-26
5) Hanaukyo Maids 5-15
6) Magical Nyan Nyan Taruto 1-12
7) Love Hina Again
8) Rurouni Kenshin 33-95

and many, many more...

Try Perfect Blue if you want an anime title that'll really mess with your head. Very graphic (both in violence and sexuality), with so many twists and psychedelic moments that it's hard to tell what's real and what isn't, right until the very end.

Very much 'Not for Children.' :D

Gotta add Miyazaki!

Surprisingly noone's mentioned anything by Miyazaki.

He's made a lot of movies which ought to be seen:

Princess Mononoke
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Porco Rosso
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service

My favorites happen to involve the swashbuckling thief Lupin III / Rupan III / Wolf. He's also got a supporting cast of sharpshooting Jigan, master swordsman Goemon, the beautiful catburglar Fujiko and Inspector Zenigata, who's goal in life is the capture of Lupin.

I think Manga Video has a dubbed version of The Castle of Cagliostro. It was made in 1980 but IMNSHO beats most of the stuff Hollywood has put out. Admittedly that isn't saying much. :D

Supposedly The Castle of Cagliostro is one of Steven Spielberg's favorite movies, animated or otherwise.

Wishful thinking but I hope Cartoon Network (or someone) will snatch up his series (there's been 3 I think) and the movies. The bad part about that is that a lot of editing will have to be done to clean it up for American tv. :(

Klaatu

Wow... too many title too little $ :(

Thanks people, just finished Nadesico and there's that cat-girl thing again (well cat-pyjamas anyway)

I still can't get myself to get Sakura Cardcaptor off the shelf though.

Re: FanSub
I heard lots about fansubs, how do you get it? Where can I find these??? How do I order them???

Thanks again.

Some great suggestions, and some stuff I wish I had way more money to get those series.

A few other suggestions worth checking out:

Phantom Quest Corp. So much like Ghost Sweeper Mikami there was a lawsuit over it, but alot of fun.

El Hazard (OAV, -not- TV series) continues to be one of my favorites, a great story with begining, middle and definite end.

Now if they'd only do some new, updated Diry Pair OAV's....

I must admit that I never did understand this cultural obsession with anime... Some of it is quite good from what I have seen, at least back when teletoon used to air anime movies late at night, but I've seen the racks of anime titles at my local geek shop, more precicely I've seen the prices of said titles and I have to ask, why would you cheerfully shell out 60, or 70 or even more to see a movie? They may be amuseing but they arn't that good. Hell I even waited for Princess Mononuke to come out in the cheep theaters before I saw it.
