[ot] Polygamy abusive to women?

Like someone said... Polygamy is usually socially forced upon young women and with little choice on the matter.

Of course its not impossible to have multiples wives and keep them happy I think... but our modern age seems to indicate that this isnt the best arrangement. Culturally for us speaking. Free society and so forth. Arab/Utah women dont complain... but can they ?

The penalty of course is many mothers in law... which far outweighs any fun in the business. A Mother in law is a hassle... 2-3 extra ones is definetely trouble.
( Yep I admit I have problems with them old hags )

I say do the modern thing and get lovers... as many as you can keep sexually satisfied and wined and dined. This goes for women too... except they dont have to spend as much money to have multiple lovers.

Well, IIRC- which is a gamble considering how long ago I read up on this guy, but- he is married to the mother of one of his wives. He married the mother first, and then the daughter (not his, btw) a few years later.

In the case mentioned above; was it legal to marry thirteen year-olds in Utah 17 years ago?

He could not have been charged if that was the case. You can't charge someone for a crime that wasn't a crime at the time of the act.. err.. if that makes any sense.

It hasn't been legal to have plural spouses in the US (which includes Utah) for a long time.

A second point I would like to stress: polygamy is not a common practice in Utah. The LDS church made it grounds for excommunication a long time ago. There are some fringe splinter groups that still think that polygamy is appropriate, but those are a small minority.

Is there a gaming significance to this question? Are you pondering, for example, creating cultures in which polygamy is the norm in your game? I was watching one of these "sex and courtship" scientific shows on TLC a while back, and it had some interesting analyses on plural marraige. For example, it mentions that a situation in which men can have plural wives is intensely competitive, and can even lead to violence, and lower-ranked males will resort to more desperate measures to reproduce.

Well, I was just making sure. Now, is polygamy allowed in Greyhawk? If so, can you marry all your followers? ;)

It was acceptable in Al Qa *fricken* Dim. Though, iirc, it was rare since you had to be able to afford the practice.

Looks like you beat me to the "defending Utah" post.

My wife is a great-great-great-granddaughter of Brigham Young (the most famous Utah Polygamist) so I always kid her about it. ;)

From a role-playing perspective if you were going for some historical accuracy the practice of polygamy (harems in it's most extreme form) was very common, especially among the rulers. I should also mention that polygamy refers to any plural marriage. Polygeny refers to multiple wives specifically and polyandry refers to multiple husbands, a practice which is very rare (I think some tibetian societies practiced it). But most people just say polygamy.
