What I would like to see would be peaceful contact with other intelligences, or "practical" space travel, but I doubt that this will happen in my live-time

Planning and executing a manned spaceflight to mars would take gazillions of dollars, a multi-decade committment to R&D, focused on a single goal, and sustained interest from many quarters. I just don't think humanity is up to it. We focus on short term rewards, and our collective mind wanders far too easily.

No, I think we'll just watch television and swill cheap beer until we rot away.

Speak for yourself. I've never drunk a beer in my life, and I hardly watch any television these days...
