[OT-rotc] I have made my decision!

Hey! The USAF is real military. I mean just because we demand all of our hotel rooms, I mean, austere living quarters have cable and A/C doesn't mean we're not rough and tough. We wear the same spiffy outfits with the brown and green splotches, and they even let us carry guns every now and then. :D

In all seriousness, the unit I'm PCSing into in July, the 3rd Combat Communications Group, is about as close to Army as you can be in the AF and still be in the AF. When deployed, we typically spend lots of time with our groundpounding bretheren. I'm going to have to learn how to use "Hooah" as a response to questions. Or in Shark's vernacular "Ooo-Rah!"

Where are you going to be going through ROTC? What Med School are you planning on going to?

I haven't worked with Combat Comm guys, but I have worked with USAF ETACs (Enlisted Terminal Air Controllers --- the guys who tell the flyboys where to put their bombs) and I must say they're great troops, absolutely as tough as they come, even if they do wear funny blue insignia on their BDUs :).

A big Hooah to you, BV210! Welcome to where the leather meets the dirt!

Thanks Olgar, I'm looking forward to it. After 3 years as a Program Manager at a software development unit (i.e., office weenie), I'm looking forward to getting my boots dirty and be in direct support of the mission rather than a REMF.

And you're right, the Combat Controllers are some tuff dudes. Our PJs got brass cojones, too.

Derian--

I'm surprised no one here has stood up for NROTC. There's no better life in the armed forces than that of a naval officer. Especially if you can get assigned to a submarine (talk about your good cooking).

I can't speak from personal experience . . . as a mere civilian, but my grandfather served in the Navy on a sub. Were I to serve, I can't think of an assignment I'd rather have.

And in case anyone were to suggest that subs don't need doctors, on my grandfather's boat they had to do an emergency appendectomy on one of the mess tables. The vict-- . . . I mean patient was back on duty the next morning.

Best of luck to you. Although I'd say you'd be better off in Air Force ROTC (but then I have to say that, as I'm a Captain in the USAF). Seriously, good luck with the paperwork nightmare and hang in there and before you know it, they'll be pinning those shiny gold bars on your lapels.

Hooah!

If you have good vision you can go into the Airforce ROTC and become an officer. If you have bad vision then your options in the Air Force in my opinion are very limited and some of those choices are not good ones.

Remember all those guys who sit in pairs with keys around their necks in the missle silos are officers. I doubt many of them have 20/20 vision. Just something to think about if you join the Air Force without having perfect vision.

I gotta disagree with you Doc. Just because an Air Force officer doesn't have perfect vision and isn't a pilot, does not mean their options are limited. I am a Communications Officer and a member of a career field bigger than that of fighter pilots. Are the wide variety of jobs out there as sexy as being a pilot? No. Is there opportunity for advancement? Of course.

Any officer (regardless of branch) has opportunity to climb the ladder and be in command at various levels. I will never be a commander of a flying unit, but I could still conceivably be the commander of an Air Base Wing. Full-bird Colonel. And just because you're a pilot doesn't mean its all glory. Somebody has to fly the big, fat, slow C-5 cargo jet. About as unsexy as they come. Or the C-9, basically a flying ambulance. Or the C-21, essentially a corporate Lear jet.

Would I like to fly an F-16? Sure. But my odds of being shot down over hostile territory as a Comm officer are very remote. :) My eyesight was not perfect when I came in, but I am still up for promotion to Major in the not too distant future.

Doc, your point about the missileers is well taken. That job strikes me as VERY boring and tedious, but has nothting to do with eyesight. Some may have 20/20. Sexy? No. Important? Heck yeah!

To anyone reading this considering a military career, either enlisted or officer, the sheer variety of jobs available is astounding. Odds are, whatever you like to do, there is a career field to match it. Like dealing with people? Public Affairs. Like weather? Meteorology. Like radios/computers/satellites? Communcations. Want to be a doctor or nurse? Do like Derian and have Uncle Sam pay for your medical training. There is much more to the military than simply putting lead on target (although that is the primary mission). Heck, I worked as a Visual Information troop for a while. TV and still cameras, video editing, and print layout. Had a blast. Stuff I worked on was broadcast on local and network channels around the country.

Anyway, any of the services has opportunity. And with this, I'll try to stop hijacking this thread.

BV210-
Where is the 3rd Combat Com located? I've been thinking about joining the Combat Com at Ramstein. But I don't remember which one it is. hehe. Of course it will be an uphill battle since the only way for me to get in is to use the little known loophole that a 3C0x2 can fill a 3C0x1 slot. :) But if it's the third that's at Ramstein then It always helps to know someone on the inside.

DerianCypher -
You could always do what one of my previous Lt's did. Go through the Army ROTC and join the Air Force. Apparently it doesn't matter what branch you join after ROTC. Anyway, best of luck to you.

Ahrimon,

The "Third Herd" is at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. I did a little checking. The unit at Ramstein is the 1st Combat Communications Squadron. Good luck!

Crap. Oh well, never hurts to try. I'm not ready to go back to the states. OS slots in my AFSC are more precious than gold.

Good luck at Tinker. It's too close to Offutt for my tastes. I spent 3 years there and I haven't been gone long enough to think about going back to the midwest. Plus I don't really like tornado's. :)
