[OT] Sad news - Richard Harris, the actor playing Professor Dumbledore died.

Sad news indeed. And here's another great gift he left us with: Gladiator, in which he played the Roman Emperor.

I can only hope to approximate this mans life!
72 years of age and still bussy acting!

What I can say is thanx for a great legacy of fantastic movies !

Sad news indeed. Richard Harris was a good actor, whose joy for his work could be found in his many roles. While I did not see the Harry Potter movie, I have seen Harris in Unforgiven, A Man Called Horse (and its sequels) and other roles.

Teflon Billy, I think you are right. Richard Harris would have been a great Walder Frey -- and would probably be amused at Lord Frey's personal life.

The acting world and the rest of us have truly lost a class act. Rest in peace.

My condolences to the friends and families of Richard Harris. He is truly a great treasure in performance art. I recalled him in movies such as A Man Called Horse and the musical Camelot. His most recent contribution is the portrayal of Professor Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films.

I hope the new young fans truly know his legacy.

Richard Harris' film and broadway roles are too numerous to count and nearly every one reflected the presence and ability of a man who actually understood and embraced his craft. I sincerely hope that the movie and stage industries decide to posthumously honor this man for his achievements and his skill in acting and performing. He represented one of the few remaining actors whom I would classify as truly iconic and capable of leaving a lasting impression in any production he was involved in. He will be missed greatly...

Among all of his great roles, I always come back to Frank in Wrestling Ernest Hemingway. The character was so much smaller and insignificant than Harris ever seemed in interviews. He was a presence on Letterman, Leno or even TVO (for those of you who are from Ontario).

I wouldn't call him a force of nature -- not only is it a cliche but it might be overestimating nature. But he was an actor of the first order. He could act his way out of his own presence in a way that Laurence Olivier, Tom Cruise, or even Peter O'Toole never could.

Don't get me wrong, he brought a characteristic verve to every role that I've seen him in. But he's always stopped being Richard Harris, Rebel Angel come Raconteur, on screen and started from the first frame being someone new.

I don't miss people I don't know. But I do wish he had time to make a few more movies.

Regards.

PS If you liked Harris, you really should check out the movie The Field, and try to forget about the song MacArthur Park.

Didn't Chris Columbus turn down the directorship for Harry Potter III? That plus the loss of Richard Harris (sad, but he had a good life and an excellent career) will mean a profound change in the next few Harry Potter movies. Dumbledore starts to take more of an active role in II and III, and alot more in IV.

As for my favorite Richard Harris movies, Cromwell is probably my favorite, though I love the job he did in Gladiator. Much better than Alec Guinness in the same role (Fall of the Roman Empire).

-Fletch!

He was also my choice to play Lord Walder Frey should they ever make a A Song of Ice and Fire movie. [/B]

Your are right he would have been perfect!

The only lord that can summon an army from his pants!!
Next book is suppose to come out in April (from what Barnes and Noble tell me. New Jordan is out in Jan.)

Sad, sad news indeed. I found out after a long day of work and I cried.

He was one of my favorites and he shall be missed. I loved him a bunch in A Man Called Horse (one of my favorites), HP, the Field, Camelot, Gladiator. I haven't seen the Molly Maguires mentioned, but that was a good one for him too. (Maybe it's because I am from Pennsylvania and my parents grew up in the coal regions. My grandfather died of black lung from the mines.)

*sigh*
