I was saying to my wife that the oscar statue looks
like he is carrying a sword.

It turns out that I was correct:

depicts a crusader knight, grasping a sword. The
knight stands on a film reel, with five spokes
that represent the five original branches of the
Academy: Directors, Actors, Writers, Producers and
Technicians.

Peter Jackson is slated to die for just such a reason. How dare he blaspheme the Oscars by winning an award for having a Good Movie(even if it wasn't best picture)?
