[OT, sorry] I've got a big problem with Planescape: Torment

You might try deleting the cache folder in the game directory. Sometimes files in there get messed up and it needs to be replaced. The game will just make a new cache the next time you load a saved file. It is an awesome game, hope you get to play it.

There's a bug in either the nVidia 23.11 drivers or the second to latest VIA 4in1 drivers that causes a BSOD under certain curcumstances. (In WinXP, it automatically reboots on a BSOD.)

Ahh! The infinite loop bug! It has been discussed on LOTS of hardware forums.

Phorck: Thanks for the suggestion. Tryed it, but still got the problem. Thanks none the less.

Psionicist: Good to see you here, I was hoping you'd show up :) I'm a bit reluctant to try the torture test (probably falling below your idea of "so good"), but it's seemed entirely stable so far (in that it hasn't crashed yet).

Kraedin (and anyone else who might be interested): I've got an nVidia GeForce2 MX 400 graphics card, and an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ processor. I'm not entirely sure what my chipset is though.

Again, thanks for all the help.

Then it's probably a VIA chipset. Most new AMD motherboards are equipped with a VIA KT266(A) norhtbridge and southbridge.

Go to the Control Panel -> Monitor (I think, I'm running a swedish OS.) -> Go to the screen where you can change your screen resolution -> Press "Settings", "Advanced" or something similar.

* If you have a tab that says "Geforce 2 MX / MX400", press it.
Look in the small box with file names. A column should say something like "4.13.01.1290" or something like that.

Look at the last 4 numbers. If it says 1290 you are running Detonator 12.90 drivers. If it says 2311 you are running 23.11. 0913 means 09.13 and so on.

Post this number here.

* If you DON'T have a tab that says "Geforce 2 MX/MX400", tell me in this thread.

Sorry about the delay replying, had to go and help my mum with her computer. I seem to have spent all of today fixing or trying to fix problems with computers.

OK, according to the Device Manager, the driver version for my GeForce card is 2.1.8.3.

Going via the Control Panel -> Display (I'd guess this is the English name for the Monitor setting?) -> Settings -> Advanced -> GeForce2 MX/MX 400, look at the numbers after the file names route, it says 5.13.01.2183.

This any help?

I've tried setting the compatabilty options to Windows 95, but that doesn't make any difference either. I've also tried disabling my anti-virus software while I run the game. Again, no difference.

Hmm, what should I try now?

I've noticed that it seems to hit this problem mostly at the "loot the bodies" stage of combat.

I'm going to re-recommend going to the main site and downloading the patches, if any are available. I'd never take it as a given that the game you just bought, even if it was yesterday, is one that has all the patches. For all you know, that copy's been sitting there for two years. ;) Try the patch, see if it helps.

If not - course, you should probably check this out anyways, if it if does work - head over to www.planetbaldersgate.com. It's an excellent jump spot to all things BG, IWD, and Torment. You'll find information and walkthroughs (either on the site proper or through the links) and a very responsive forums for each of the Infinity Engine games. If your crash problem continues, post on the Torment forum and I am sure that someone will be able to help you out. :)

I've found the site absolutely invaluable. Speaking of which, I have to pop over there to check a thread... :D

Thanks for the link Ashtal, looks like a rather good site. Tried the forums, but the only topic covering the same problem as me is not really conclusive. Still, I'll try posting over there and see if someone can help me.

Just tryed the game again, and this time it crashed almost as soon as I loaded my save  It's a pain.

FYI, the version of PS:T I'm running is 1.10000. Is this the latest, or is there a more recent version?

Psionicst, was the info I posted any use?
