Sort of how a suburb of Lexington, called Versailles, is pronounced "Ver-sails" by the locals.

Damn Kentuckicans. :D

Pittsburghers, too - we've got a 'North Versailles' pronounced the same way.

My GF lived in a town named Killam Alberta. with a sweet sign outside of town that reads " We love our Children, Killam"

Hey Latency!

Wow, I can't believe there is someone ELSE here who knows of Killam, Alberta. (I grew up in Forestburg - tell your girlfriend that. She'll know where it is.)

Other town/city names that are a little silly if you never lived near them: Galahad, AB; Heisler, AB; Strome, AB; Red Deer, AB; Moosejaw, Sask.

Later,

KF72

p.s. Small Town Fact: There is a Forestberg in Texas too.

My heavens, how could anyone talk about odd place names in Alberta without mentioning Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Alberta.

It isn't actually a town, per se. But the name of the site can't be beat. (It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for what it's worth.)

At the other end of the country Newfoundland is very rich in interesting town names.

Take a Gander at these:

Come-By-Chance...

which, if you aren't careful, can lead you to...

Conception.

But if you want to avoid the hassle just stick with...

Dildo.

If you don't believe me you can...

Blow Me Down.

Cheers.

Er, cheers. That isn't a place name that I know of.

Couple of other oddities in town names:

Toad Suck, AR
Medicine Hat, AB or MB - can't remember now
Rifle & Parachute, CO
Two Guns, AZ

and, not a town, but the name of a street in York, England, UK (included here only because the name is longer than the street itself and it's a really odd name, to boot):

Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma Gate

:)

Some from Mississippi:

Were (pronounced "where")
Buck Snort
Scooba
Hot Coffee
D'Lo (It's a long story about the town being "too damn low")

There are (of course) plenty of others, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

I never thought of it as that strange of a name but there is a town in Michigan called.
Bad Axe

I've kind of wondered if Bad Axe games has anything to do with the town...

later,
Ysgarran.

Edit: I forgot about the infamous Big Bone Lick, KY.

You beat me to it Dave-o!

But don't forget Monkey's Eyebrow, KY.

And in Indiana, not too far from Gnaw Bone, is the town of Bean Blossom.
