[OT - Tech] Mobos and processors

I'm not really considering buying anything just yet, since I just bought a new GeForce4 (damn you NWN!!! :p). I've been doing some looking around though, and I'm thinking about getting an AMD Athlon processor. What I'm wondering is if I can just plop the AMD processor (and fan, and other stuff) right on my motherboard, without any issues. Right now I have a Pentium II in there, and so I'm concerned about combatibility issues. Any techies wanna give some advice?

Absolutely NOT! (I mean, you can't just drop it in there -- I will be happy to offer advice. )

Any Athlon processor is going to require a completely new motherboard, and new RAM as well. So unless you can afford the whole shmear (this willl probably run about US $300 for decent stuff) don't purchase just the one component.

Mkay, I checked out AMD's site and they gave some suggestions for motherboards to buy.

I'm not planning to do this for a long while, but I figure it's best I learn about it first before I plunge. Right now I can barely even afford food :)
